im from a property in nsw and we've got a few toyotas with uhf's in them. we used to buy uniden but after a short time something always seems to go wrong with them, especially with the handpiece. So no we've changed to gme for the last 5-6 years and not have had any trouble at all.

Hi Zacc
I have had Unidens for about 15 years and no problems. They take a beating as I used them in tractors, 4wd, trucks and even on a quad bike. I still have and use the ones I bought back then. I have recently upgraded to a Uniden UH500 SX so as to having scanning facilities.
They are like something else that once used the term "unbreakable".
Cheers

Hi Zacc,

Ive got a GME TX4000. Its about 16 years old and hasn't missed a beat. It has currently travelled around 420 thousand km in 2 cars.

I'm obviously very happy with its reliability.

In all honesty I don't think (if you stick to a uniden GME or icom) that you'll get a bad unit.

But I'll be buying another GME if i ever require another.

Cheers Wilko

As I have said many times before and I'll state it again for newcomers, If you want listeners to hear you nice and crisp clear then get a GME , As a truckie I have used CB's since 1976, As an Escort/Pilot operator I talk to every oncoming truck or car/caravan coming toward me and I have put this to the test many times, when I hear a transmission coming through my CB that the voice coming through sounds like he's talking with half a BigMac in his mouth I have quizzed him as to what brand of radio he's using and the answer is always Uniden, most times one has to say Ay...repeat that again a couple of times before you get the message , so now it's your move, make the right decision.

You're correct Doug. Whenever I'm at another vehicle on a club trip and I hear my missus braodcasting from our Uniden she sounds odd. And you saying they sound like they have a stuffed mouth is interesting because that is what she sounds like too.
I'll go GME next time.
And another post mentioned the Uniden handpieces - I've had heaps fail. In the end the guy at the shop sold me a GME hand piece but had to make some internal adjustment so it would work with the Uniden.
Thanks Doug.

you are right, you can tell when someone is using a gme from the clarity of the transmission. gme is much better than uniden

I was sold a GME TX3300 by my mechanic

he is a crew leader for the local CFA brigade and they have been fitting them to the fire vehicles, he recommended it and I was not going to disagree with him.

I have very little experience with radios and don't like using them but they can be handy tools if required.

I am more than happy with mine but have only used it a few times.

PS The unit has all the controls in the mike so you don't have to look away from the road to change settings etc. Very handy !

The units with the controls in the mike are expensive to replace when the mike plays up. the two main things that bugger up in CBs is arial, leads & hand mikes.

FWIW I'm carrying one around the outback as a one of a set of emergency devices in the expectation that if stuck it might have the range to contact someone while in the more travelled areas - testing shows that rarely others are around. It's a 2w unit; 5w might work better.

I use a mobile hand held Uniden 40 UHF 5kw. Its great to transfer from car to car. Its as small as a mobile phone and as powerful as a fixed permanent installed unit. Approx $300 per unit its cheap and portable. Mine is 6m years old and works as good as new.
