Off Road Fridge

Submitted: Sunday, Feb 10, 2002 at 00:00

Kevin Noble

I am shortlty starting a 2 year trip around Australia with a Nissan Patrol and small caravan. We plan to leave the van and travel often in just the patrol and I am trying to decide on a fridge, I am presently in favour of either the Trailblaza or Liemack as they appear to be the best in very hot conditions. We will have a small generator and solar panel to rechage with. Any comments or other suggestions would be appreciated.

Kevin, I would buy Engel For 12v only and Chescold freezer for 3way use. Both are very effective and can be serviced all over Australia if required. Mal

Kevin, have had both ie. had a Trailblaza before we got the Liemack. No problems with either. There was a thread a week or so ago with info on the Liemack.

Kevin Have a look at the Waeco web site. They have a 50 litre for less than a $1000 bucks. I have their FF 40 and can't fault it. Smaller than an Engel, more size and features and much cheaper.

Kevin, I have owned a trailblazer for about 7 or 8 years and its an excellent fridge/freezer. It is a little bigger & heavier than some but the 75mm of insulation & marine grade aluminium make it very efficient & strong for the hot climates when travelling around Australia. Feel free to ask if you would like to know more about the fridge....Cam

Check before you get it but one of the fridges, and I think it's the Liemack, requires extra heavy duty wiring to run due to the substantially extra current draw. Granted the on-cycle time is less but it is additional hassle over conventional.
