As I write this we are at the end of Day One of the last airshow at Temora for this year.

And I have a big bone to pick with all you EasternStaters: You have kept this a secret from us West Aussies for too long and I’m letting the cat out of the bag.

Temora is a surprisingly busy town in SSW NSW and is fortunate to have an aircraft museum that specialises in Warbird aircraft that can fly. No static displays for these people.

We are staying in the new Airfield Caravan Park right inside the airport and it’s a beauty. When we got here on Friday we sat under our van’s awning watching the rehearsals. It’s not everyday you can sit outside your van watching an F86 Sabre do aerobatics with a beer in one hand, some nibblies in the other hand, camera in the other hand and binoculars in the other hand.

There are also large residential blocks of land here that you can buy but you MUST build a hangar on the back of your house. The hangar opens onto a taxiway and you can just take your aircraft out and take off.

The museum and aircraft are really good. Today we sat through a terrific display. They are all about showing the aircraft off but not stressing them to their limits. So each aircraft is towed out and parked in front of the crowd. Its history is explained then the pilot jumps in and cranks it up. Then it gets airborne and goes through a routine that shows it off to the crowd. All the best angles for photos.

After it lands the pilot has a talk and the next one gets ready. At the end of the day each pilot stands next to his aircraft and the crowd can come out onto the hardstand and ask questions and get really close to the aircraft.

There were WW2 veterans in the hangar selling books about their exploits. Some of these blokes were 90 years old. Well done.

Tomorrow we see a similar program but they will get their Canberra bomber into the air. Looking forward to that.

Hey Mr GB. Temora always gets a good write up in "Aviation Australia" magazine. It is a shame that we can't get something similar out Cunderdin way.

Cheers

You're right about Cunderdin Mark.

Is that still the main training site for China Airlines?

China Southern are using Merredin which is strange considering the quality of Cunderdin with its cross runway. The government are talking about having training facilities at Wyalkatchem of all places. The RFDS divert to Cunderdin at every opportunity so that is hard to understand. Wylie is a nice place but has a gravel runway. The government also has plans to install a ILS outside of the metro area for training which you would think would suit Cunderdin and would provide an alternate to Perth for the turbo props and smaller jets ie Embrear, F100 or even 717s at a push.

Cheers

I hope that is you with the beer, not the pilot...lol.

Great pics, wish I was there.

Is this an annual event or is it held more often?

Cheers

Neil, it's an aviation smorgasbord.

They do this 5 times a year.

Here are next years dates:

Flying Days 2010
January 30th & 31st
April 10 & 11
June 5 & 6
August 14 & 15
November 20 & 21

http://www.aviationmuseum.com.au/museum/

The other interesting thing is that it was all established by David Lowy. Now the website says he is a Board Member of Westfield so I assume he's Frank Lowy's son. Next time I shop at a Westfield shopping centre it will be with a different outlook.

That's pretty cool Doug.

I took some video yesterday. The sounds of the Spitfires and Kittyhawk were pretty good but I must say that the two Avengers with a massive great radial engine did it for me.

Thank you Doug and Dusty. Wonderful. Vera Lynn has always been a favourite as she seemed to capture the mood of the times perfectly. Now it will take me thrity minutes or so o come back to the present.

Fantastic Doug, that looks as if it may have been filmed at Duxford in the UK. Part of the Imperial war museum, I was there two years ago and saw twelve Spitfires, eight of them flying as well as dozens of other aircraft. It would have to be one of the best aviation museums in the world. Also has a fantastic tank and military vehicle collection.

Thanks Doug ,

That was great to watch and listen to.

A couple of years ago, I attended the funeral of a very wonderful man named Tom Moon, who rode his aerobatics plane into the ground at Temorah.

There was a flypast of the museum Spitfire after the funeral and I have a memory of a very high pitched supercharger whine - not at all like the roar in the video "White Cliffs of Dover".

Perhaps the whine was from another plane flying with the Spit.

The Air Show is sensational and I can recommend a weekend at Temorah to anyone.

Willie.

PS. In the video, one of the Spits had weird looking squared of wings. I wonder what that was developed for.

PPS. Stephen you are going to wear that van out before you get home.

Hi Willie,

I think the square tips were designed for low altitude work. This is from memory though, so I could be wrong.

Willie,

I've only just bought it, so I haven't had a chance to try it out too much. It's previous owners did plenty of rough miles in it and it's still in one piece. I hope it stays that way! I'm off to Crowdy Bay up the coast today. Won't involve any rough roads, but hopefully a few relaxing days at the beach.

Well, I'm glad we were here for the whole weekend because today (Sunday) was miserable.

Strong winds, low cloud, rain squalls. the pilots did really well to even get up there let alone hold some very tight formations.

They got the Canberra bomber airborne, but I must admit, we retreated to the caravan to watch from there. Then we could jump inside when the rain came through.

Down at the hangar it was like a huge metal windsock with the wind howling in full frontal.

Anyway, what a great weekend. Highly recommended.

Hi GB,
I'm very glad the show is still going on at Temora.

The "father" of the show, Col Paye was killed in a crash on Lake Liddell a few years back. He owned a major share of the old war birds that where on show in the early days.

Col crashed a fire bombing plane into the Lake at Liddell power station whilst testing a new water collection system.

If that's the old Grumman I think it is it sits at Rutherford airport quite regularly. It flew over my place about a fortnight ago heading out toward the sea.

It's an old carrier aircraft and has folding wings. Beautiful piece of engineering!

Magnificent old planes all of them!
