tow ball down weights pajero / prado

Hi all,

I've checked both manufacturers web site's and checked the forum archives (my search criteria never seems to give me what I want!) and get mixed messages when I ring the dealerships.
Could some one PLEASE tell me the the tow ball down weights for the Prado and the Pajero (this years models) as our new van will be up around the 300kg mark.

Cheers and thanks in advance, Keith

Stumbly
I can't tell you what the weights are, but if you are looking at a ball weight of 300kg that will be too high for either of those vehicles. Even if they say the vehicle will take 300 you really should consider something with a bit of tolerance. A ball weight of 300 would usually translate to a van of 3 tonne and in my view that is much too much for either of those tugs. I hope that isn't your van's empty weight, because if it is you really should be looking at an F250 or something like that. By the time you put all your goodies into a van of that size it will probably go well over the 3500 limit for the Landcruiser. Remember that 200 litres of water weighs 200kg and most large vans these days have that capacity, then there is the weight of your gas bottle/s and various other things - bedding, table, chairs hoses etc, before you start putting clothes and food into it. Your Annexe could weigh up to 25kg. When you have a large van with lots of space, it is very easy to put up to 1000kg in without realising.

And end up severely overloaded and illegal and voiding insurance

400kg is the normal legal payload of a tandem van including EVERYTHING added after van is tared

Except for some offroad models that are built to a different spec.

Thanks every one,

Bu--ered if I could find that on the dealers website ( and yes, I did look!!).
Teege, the van is a base station - 2200kg tare with a 700kg payload and 300kg ball weight. We will not be loading it to its full weight, I've figured on around 2500kg total but it will still be 300kg ball weight.
A mate of mine tows a billabong at similar weights with no problems but i'm always open to advice - perhaps a 76 series cruiser?

Thanks again every one, Keith

The latest model has a maximum Tow Weight of 3000kg with a Max ball Weight of 300kg
Earlier models had a max tow weight of 2500kg with a max Ball Weight of 250kg.
Check the vehicle handbook for correct figures to suit your model.
They also require that an appropriate WDH be used for Ball Weights that exceed 130kg.
Depending on the actual ball weight you may require (By Law) a WDH along the lines of a HR550 (250kg capacity) or a HR750 (350kg capacity).
On the van itself check the ATM on the compliance Plate. This is the maximum legal weight the loaded van can weigh. The ATM cannot exceed the towing capacity of your model vehicle or the capacity of the Tow Hitch (Bar) fitted to the vehicle.

Hi stumbly1, I'm pretty sure the new Pajeros can tow up to 3ton but once your up to that the ball weight has dropped to 180 don't know about the prado we had a2004 pajero and updated to a 2004 toyota landcruiser when we got our new van which would be at least 3 ton fully loaded just for peace of mind cheers Sue

My apology. suepajero is correct. I had the ball weight wrong in my previous post.
Ball weight is 250kg up to a tow weight of 2500kg and decreases to 180kg ball weight for a tow weight of 2500 - 3000kg.
But a WDH is still required for ball weight s over 130kg.
I'm working of the 2008 Vehicle Towing Mass Guide and I'm still waiting for my copy of the current 2009 guide.

Thanks ozjohn and supajero, sorry to get back to you so late.

If ball weight is supposed to be 10% of total van weight, why would they reduce the ball weight on the pajy to 180kg for a 3 ton van?
Doesn't seem to add up.....
I havn't used a WDH before, does this transfer enough weight from the tow ball to bring it back to the said 180kg on a 3 ton van?

Cheers, Keith

Hi Stumbly1,Sorry can't help you why they did that didn't make much sense to us either we just went with the bigger motor in the cruiser just to be on the safe side. There is a lot of rigs out there that look ok but you don't want to find out the hard way that your car won't pull you up when you need it to.We do use a WDH always have, has to be safer if everything is sitting well Good Luck Cheers Sue
