Dont know about the versa light, but a while ago i bought a coleman duel fuel lantern and i can only say its fantastic . it runs for about 10 hours on a litre of petrol, and when it runs out you can fill it up from your car(unless it an oil burner).carnt fill up a gas bottle in the bush!
highly recomended as an alternative.
ps
also have a duel fuel stove, with the same thoughts.
hope it helps

Macka, For about 6 years now I've had and use a 12volt flouro light that has a pyramid shaped shade. The underside has a highy reflective surface which creates an abosluty brilliant light. I can't remember the name of the light, but I got it from WA Solar Supplies in Perth. Cost was about $98.00.

Hi,
I have been camping for many years and tried lots of lights. I find that the Versa Light is by far the best. Much better that gas type lights, No noise and more easily stored, takes less room. The light produced is very white which helps with failing eyesight at night in the camp.
They cost around $90 in Qld.and only run of 12 volt.

Versa-Lite is the best 12 volt light I've tried (40 years camping). However, I do like the old pressure lamps for versatility, but tying mantles is a pain.

Macka,
I have both the verslite (which is excellent) and a coleman dual fuel with dual mantles.
Both lights are excellent, but you cannot take the versalite away from the car as you have to plug it in... The coleman light however runs for ages on a litre of fuel, you can take it with you to the table, toilet etc.. Horses for courses I guess...

We have the versa lite and it has a brilliant light at around 1A draw which is good. A lot of people have commented on how strong the light intensity is out of them. I'm sure it was $90 something a bit over a year ago.
