Looking to buy new 200 TD Landcruiser. The dealers can supply GXL cars without KDSS suspension now or have to wait 2 months if I want a GXL with KDSS fitted.

Is it that good that I should wait?

Depends on where you are going and what you intend doing with it.

An indication would help get better answers

Graham,

It doesn't really matter where you go with KDSS, as it improves handling quite markedly on road as well as improve articulation off road.

Stupidly all models except the supposed volume seller, the GXL diesel, have KDSS as standard.

I have also had OME suspension upgrade, to assist with towing and to take all the extra weight on my round Australia trip and the whole thing handles extremely well for such a big vehicle.

Hi Pling,

Check out the thread on LCOOL (Land Cruiser Owners On Line) and this question has been asked before LCOOL KDSS thread. The overwhelming consensus was that is was very much worth it. And as an owner of a GXL TTD with KDSS, there is no way I would get a 200 without it :)

Cheers

Hi Pling,

I have KDSS in my TD 200 - I think it is wonderful and when you go to resell it I think you will easily recover its cost. A 200 without KDSS is like Xmas without Santa! I think a 2 month wait is worth it - but difficult I know.

HI Pling,

I asked the same question on here recently.
Have a look at Thread 73073.

If your not towing & seeing you have a Petrol Patrol why not look at the Petrol Cruiser & get the KDSS for free & also save yourself $10,000 on the vehicle & $2,500 on KDSS. They are not as savage on fuel on the h'way & around town as some purport. Yes ! I have one.

Is there an aspect of fuel tank size with this suspension or has that now been changed. I thought it came with a smaller fuel tank?

This had a great impact when towing in the country and reduced range?

All models can have KDSS and twin tanks. In the GXL TTD, KDSS is simply an add option whereas in some of the VX and Sahara models they are now only a 7 seater, not 8, to allow for twin tanks. Not sure of the exact add/delete options required for these models, but KDSS and twin tanks are available on all models in some manner.

As for payload, its 590kg for the GXL TTD, but dependent on model and options. There doesn't appear to be a payload difference for the GXL with or without KDSS. Best bet is to check out the Toyota website and see the tech specs for the model you are after.

Cheers

Captain,

Gedday mate..., but I think the 590kg payload is for the Sahara. The VX is 635kg and I think the GXL is 670kg...at least in 07/08 guise.

The GXL Petrol comes with KDSS & 135ltr tank standard. The GXL Diesel costs extra for KDSS but the fuel capacity stays the same. The VX & Sahara have reduced fuel capacity as far as I know, but this may have changed with the latest model.

Get the KDSS. You can't add it later and it works a treat.

You have had all the PRO KDSS comments, but I can tell you that our GXL without KDSS has not suffered any disadvantage. It has travelled 60,000 km now in all kinds of conditions and haven't needed the wheel articulation provided by the KDSS. We have travelled to The Kimberely, including the Gibb River Road and lots of places in between.

I effectively put the "saved" money into a Lovells Springs GVM upgrade. This provides a much better, more stable ride than the OEM suspension. The GVM upgrade was from 3300kg to 3800kg.

I am also in the process of getting the TOWING capacity upgraded from 3500kg to 3850kg. I needed the GVM upgrade (plus other things) to achieve the Towing capacity upgrade.

Simply put its horses for courses, but the KDSS would add no value to my vehicle. If you want to spend the extra on KDSS go for it. When you add up all the extras you are likely to fit, $20,000 might not cover it!?

I don't believe resale will be an issue because I will be keeping this vehicle for approximately 300,000km in line with all my previous Landcruisers. This is our sixth.

Just a different point of view.

Regards, JAX

I cannot agree

Non KDSS served you well compared to what? Fact is that it is better.
Also remember that you have not 'saved' money. Wait for resale and you will find out what I mean. With word coming around, not many people will opt for non KDSS as it improves handling on and off road immensely

We back to back tested two LC200 update editions when we did the NG Prado launch. With KDSS is the way to go without question.

But the difference between the LC200 hydraulic KDSS and the 150 Prado with the system is poles apart. With the new Prado being considerably better. Than LC200 on the same corners and road at the same speeds as well as off-road. But I can assure you unless you can drive the vehicles back to back you will not pick it. As it is the LC200 with KDSS is an excellent choice. So much so that we will probably be replacing one of the Prado's with a LC200 GXL with KDSS
