Braidwood camping

this is about 15 min outside of braidwood -- its by a river that has deep water --- long drop toilets and plenty of spaces to camp -- free camping - very popular spot with over night campers --- i have not camped there as yet - but this is my half way point for trips from bega to Sydney and vice versa ..

Stewarts Crossing which is on Stewarts Crossing road that turns west from the Nerriga road at Charleyong is a good spot - no facilities but a big open space under tall ribbon gums and a big sandy beach. Or a bit further north at Oallen Ford where there are good riverside camping areas.

I can't recall how far from Braidwood, but if you travel south along the road to Cooma, you will come to a turn off to the left....to "The Big Hole". You drive in there for about 1 klm and there is a camping ground with a pit toilet. If you want to go for a walk (about half hour), you can cross the Shoalhaven River and go to see The Big Hole...it's very impressive.

It's bitumen all the way, but the road does turn to gravel further south if you keep heading towards Cooma.

If you are interested, you can also get into Bendethra/Deua NP from this direction too....just need to travel further south, onto the dirt road and look for the sign pointing to the east (left off the track) and this will take you into some very interesting (and somewhat challenging) 4WD country. You should have a map though, if you intend to do this trip....you can go right through to Moruya if you wish.

there is free camping at majors creek show ground with toilets bbqs about 20ks from Braidwood plenty of room for the kids cheers bill.

A few km on the Braidwood side of Nerriga there is a road to your left and there is Oallen - about 10 - 15km down the road, at the river there you can camp where ever you like, pretty sandy but its nice and quiet usually and not too many ppl camp out there. Its a great place. There is also Mongola to your right along Braidwood rd on your way to Nerriga.....from memory its about 40min. Should be able to find some camping out there.

G'day, the Shoalhaven River at Oallen is extremely low at the moment, it's hardly running under the bridge at all (Hope this rain helps). Some of the larger pools are OK to swim but shallow, but avoid any areas that are a bit stagnant. Idiots camping there still insist on polluting the water so be careful of rubbish etc in the water. There are no toilets so take a chemical toilet (don't wash it out in the river!) or dig a hole quite a way back from the water and bury it deep! Keep it clean for everyone. There's lots of families with kids who stay in this area, so mums and dads should watch out for bits of barbed wire, broken bottles, etc (what is the redneck appeal in smashing bottles????). I think it's total fire ban at the moment too. Some people camp near the Corang River Bridge too but I'm not sure if that area is private property or not. You can get VERY basic supplies (bread etc) from the Nerriga Pub, and ice, but there's no petrol in Nerriga anymore, the nearest would be Braidwood. The pub does meals on weekends only, weekdays it's pies and sausage rolls only. Anyone at the pub could probably tell you some other camping places. It's a great area, so have fun!
