GQ TD42

Zapper

Hi all

Am wondering if any diesel gurus can help me.

I have a GQ with TD42 that has a safari turbo fitted. Has almost done 170,000km. It has a mechanical clicking/rattling noise that sounds like its coming from the top front of the motor. The noise was there when I bought it and I thought it was tappets but just had them done and it is only slightly better. Its worse when cold obviously, the mechanic reckons its piston slap due to the engine being turboed and worked hard occasionally towing, not so sure myself though. Have seen so many 4.2's do a lot more work and no such problem. Engine uses absolutely no oil from change to change, has always had oil/filter on the dot, starts well no smoke etc. My father has the exact same set up in his ute but has done 120,000km more than mine (and a lot harder too, towing boom sprayers over worked country) and his is noticably quieter.

We had a similar problem on a stationery diesel at the farm that turned out to be injectors, (even though the mechanic insisted it was a valve problem and pulled the head off to find it wasn't).

Can anybody tell me if they have had similar probs, would rather not spend the $500 they quoted me to service the injectors if it is in fact piston slap and it wont help

Thanks

Zapper,
Had that noise on mine....
Did the injectors and it dissapeared, the 4.2 is not a quiet engine but mine had a distinctive tapping noise that at times dissapeared but when it stayed I did the injectors, problem solved.
The injectors on those are low pressure and need to be done every 100000kms.

170,000 klm is not much for a TD42. Mine has nearly 300,000klms on it now with the turbo on.

Have you thought about getting a second opinion from another Mechanic?

Ive heard of injectors causing this problem too, so if you think that could be the problem, 170,000 is probably due to have the injectors done anyway.

Go with ya gut feeling!

Another possibility is severe wear on the rocker tips where they contact the valve stem. It is a well known problem on toyota 2h motors. The valve clearance as set will not account for the worn depression in the centre of the rocker arm which can be many times the spec. setting.

Sometimes, just adjusting the tappets will fix the problem
