Wave Rock

A group of us are planning to visit Wave Rock (Hyden WA) for a weekend soon , will take the camper and probably stay at the local caravan park - other than visiting the rock (which I'm told won't take very long) is there anything else to see/visit in the area.

Last weekend we were up in the Paynes Find area , if you are every in the area take the tour over the Battery (Gold) its very interesting and still operational (although it was not at the time of our visit)

Any ideas on Wave Rock would be appreciated.

Not much to do at Hyden other than the Wave Rock attractions. If you've got the entire weekend you could consider incorporating some of the Holland Track. Off the top of my head I think you pick the track up about 50km's east of Hyden where it crosses the Hyden-Norseman Rd. Heading SW from the road takes in a relatively short section of the track (then it intercepts another road heading back towards Hyden) and there are a couple of nice camping spots along here. If you go in the opposite direction from the road (NE) you could poke along the track as far as you want. There's quite a few landmarks to see along the way and fairly regularly spaced. Catch is you'd have to turn around and come back the same way unless you've got the time to go all the way to Coolgardie. Most newagents sell the "Holland Track & Cave Hill Woodlines" guidebook put out by the Western 4WDriver mob. It has track history and trip notes. Otherwise just have a look at the Holland Track trip notes available from this site. We did the HT at Easter and really enjoyed it. There'd been a bit of rain so the rock holes and granite catchments were all full. Very pleasant amble through the scrub.

Thanks for the feedback - some of our party will be in conventional vehicles this weekend so a look at the Holland track , this time , is not feasible although this is a trip in the "Must Do" file

If you prefer to stay in the bush rather than caravan parks there is a nice little site of Spurr rd at McCann rock about 10 km on the right before Hyden it has water and toilets plus a shed for shelter very quiet and free , also have a look at Emu rk on the Hyden Norsman rd a nice camp site , also the campsite at the breakaway on this road is quite interesting , take a look at Dragon rocks reserve just south of Hyden there is an untouched by 4x4 tyres section of the Holland track see the Holland track book mentioned by Mellisa if you need GPS waypoints let me knowBorn to drive a 4x4 , not a keyboard

Thanks Peter- McCann Rock sound OK , most of our group prefer to camp in the bush where possible , also appreciate the other info. We should be able to fill in our weekend.

If you are going to venture onto the Holland track, be sure to check the road conditions. We (4 vehicles ARE packed ready to do the track this weekend). Checked the road conditions and they have had nearly an inch of rain. Needless to say that 10 vehicles have been bogged out there this week. Infomation via Hyden Tourist Shop. We will go to Paynes Find instead.

Not all of us will be in 4WDs this trip so we will not be all that adventurous. The Holland is in our "to do" basket - maybe next Easter?
Last W/End we circumnavigated Lake Moore, from Koorda up the eastern side to Paynes Find and back down the highway to Goodlands Rd / Kalannie/ Wongan & home. Got back on the bitumen just as the rain started so the dust not mud was our main irritaion.
About 5 - 9Kms off the Gt Northern H/Way down the Goodlands Road are a stretch of Wreath flowers (on both sides of the road) if you are interested in wild flowers. It was warm and windy when we were there so they were showing signs of heat stress but it would have rained since then.

McGann rock is fine for 2WD

Emu rock 4WD follow vermin proof fence
