Another tyre comparison
Submitted: Thursday, Feb 14, 2002 at 00:00
Dean
A Bridgestone tyre dealer recently gave me three reasons why he believes the 693AT is a tougher tyre than the BFG/ATKO.
1. The 693 has a nylon cap in the tyre for extra strength, and the plunger tests off this cap were reported in both 4x4Aust. and Overlander magazines in June/July 2001.
2. The BFG have a triguard sidewall, and each ply is 1000 microns, however, even though the 693 has only two plies in the sidewall, they are 1500 microns each, making them both the same thickness.
3. The 693 uses much newer technology in designing and constucting the tyre, whereas the BFG uses the same rubber they have been using for years.
I'm a bit dubious about this information as the size tyre I'm comparing is 265/70/16. In the 693 this size only comes in a 4 ply + the nylon cap passenger construction, while the BFG is an 8ply light truck construction tyre. If the 4ply is so tough why do Bridgestone bother making an 8ply tyre themselves, eg. the 235/85/16.
Is there anybody with some
technical
knowledge that can shed some light on this issue.
