I got to be honest ,I once thought the GM V8 diesel was great being a chev fan,until I come across some american sites.This engine is actually a big block chev V8 that has been dieselised and comes in 3-4 different capacities.It is fitted to the chev/holden suburban and to the famous hummer.In the US they have had so much trouble with them that many GM dealers refuse to stock diesel vehicles unless ordered.The US defence forces have a deal with GM every time a unit breaks down it is replaced under warranty with a brand new one regardless of the problem so that is where all these 2nd hand units are coming from as well from dealers.To be fair most of the problems are not with the actual motor,but the Stanadyne injector pump that is fitted .There is also cyl head cracking issues as well that allow water into the combustion chamber.There are thousands and thousands of complaints from customers who had the pump replaced 3/4/5 times and are still not satisfied. GM have being having problems with their car diesels going back to the early 80s.This has caused a consumer backlash against diesels inthe US partly because of that and the fact that US consumers are far less educated on diesels than Australians and Europeans who have had wonderful service from diesel powered vehicles going back decades.It has upset companies like Mercedes that have complained that Americans think that diesels are all the same as GMs .Now I know some have had good service out of their 6.2/6.5ltr but overall the engine has an unenviable record of failure and thats coming from a chev man.
Do a search for" Diesel Doctor" a US forum that attempts to help owners with concerns about all diesel motors but is snowed under with with just one motor.

Diffs from a 78 series will fit in easily with 4wdiscs. If you bought a writeoff, it would most certainly come with a 1hz/5 speed that will go in fairly easily aswell.
If not your preferance, keep an eye out for a 12ht from a turbo 60 series, it should go straight in being a 2h block, same again if you buy a writeoff, you may get the 5 speed aswell plus wiring harnesses etc. This is the cheapest way to retrofit as you can make your $$ back from spares.
