Hilux Clock Spring (Faulty Airbag Clock Spring)

Submitted: Thursday, Mar 18, 2010 at 22:32

Secret Mens Business

My Airbag light is on on my 05 Hilux Dual Cab and the dealer advised me it is a faulty clock spring (The spiral cable that connects the airbag in the steering column) and is a $600 repair, only $75 to fit. I have heard this is not uncommon and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, the car has only done 100,000Kms.

Yeah my Prado did the same thing, left it for few days and it went away. Seemed to happen everytime i degreased the engine bay. BILs 07 Hilux did the same. When i rang another BIL, who worked for Toyota he said very very common problem.

Yeah funny you have said that..... had a headlight globe blow last week on my 2005 Hilux and I thought the same thing....shouldn't be allowed to falsely advertise.

What do you think has happened to "unbreakable" or are we just being unreasonable.

It is a known waranty problem.
It is the airbag module in the column.
We had 5 replaced just on 100,000km under warranty.
My current hilux now has 126,000km and it only comes on every now and then and is out of warranty so it won't be getting fixed.
The other issue on hard worked hiluxes is the steering rack end on the driver's side gets about 1/2in of play. This is usually fixed under warranty as well (we had 3)

Cheers

A few people on the NewHilux forum seem to have had them replaced for free out of warranty, maybe have a poke around there for some 'tips'.

This is a problem with many vehicles not just Hilux.
It is used for several purposes one being to tell the Computer when the steering wheel is straight ahead or how far it is turned at any given time.
This is also part of the anti slip control that vehicles have these days

The last one I was involved with was a Peugeot and it cost $900
