Don't know if it'll help, though here is a link to another thread that discusses their trip up to Cowombat Flat:

According to Shonky Maps the murray begins here

S36 48.734 E148 04.808

which is the Limestone Creek and dead Horse Creek join to make the Murray River.

Can't vouch for it as the maps are called "Shonky"

According to "Shonky", you can get close to the start via Limestone Track.

However City Navaigator has a different opinion and reckons the Murray starts here

S36 47.899 E148 11.995

Who knows?

From Google Earth it appears to be a bit further NE of that location. Have a squiz on Google earth at: S36 47 47.55 E148 11 42.37.

Make sure the borders are shown.

Yeah it certainly looks like it. City Nav Reckons the murray goes on further but I can't see how it would.

The other one in Shonky reckons the murray turns South here S36 47.536 E148 06.014 before running out at the junction of Limestone and Dead horse creek here

S36 48.734 E148 04.808 You know I can't find any info on the web that gives a definitive answer. It's probably clearly marked on a 1-50000 map somewhere.

See my post below. It is supposed to start where the straight line of the border meets and then follows the Murray. See Forest Hill Cairn.

Yeah, the Cairn says "near the Source" so I guess it must be somewhere near there.

G'day,
If you email Bill Black he'll put you onto the right place to walk into Forest Hill with your GPS.
He did the trip a couple of years ago with a group and everything went according to plan. Bill is a descendent of the original surveyor.
I'll wait for your reply.
I've been there myself, but that was when you could drive to Cowombat Flat

That's because I didn't post it until you replied.
I have just spoken to Bill and he said he would rather talk to on the landline, so give me your Email and I can then send his phone # to you.

There was an article in the Australian Geographic a couple of years ago I think, perhaps you could find it by doing a search of their website.

If you get the Rooftop's 'Corryong - Omeo - Thredbo Adventure Map' it shows the source near the DC3 wreck mentioned in another message here. There is a border cairn on Forest Hill. Approx position 36.800S 148.206E.
The map states "Start of Murray River at confluence of two small gullies in small bog."
The map also shows "The Poplars Camping Area (highest public vehicle access to the Murray River)"
I believe that it is quite a trek to the source as vehicle access is now prohibited.

Gday - i did this 2 easters ago - camped at native dog flat with the family and got dropped off at thelocked gate on the track - we took mountain bikes with us so we could easily do it in a day. basically it starts at a cairn where on you map the man made straight line stops.

took about 3 hous in and 2.5 back

used hema high country map

note maps are slightly inaccurate in this area ?
