Burra in SA (maybe slightly out of the way) even allowed to have a camp fire of your own. Curtin Springs NT(fairly rough but cheap)good spot before the day touring Uluru. Alice Springs has a caravan park called Heritage CAravan and Tourist Park. This is also a place for all your spare parts and repairs for trailers and caravans.Hope this helps

Hi Grahame,
We found Mitchell to be alovely spot to stop over. About 1 km on the southern side next to the river there is a two night free caravan park. Excellent conditions with on suite sites. The council at Mitchell provides this facility free for two nights to entice people to stop over and thereby spend money in the town. If you stop don't miss a swim in the thermal pools. You will enjoy the experience.
Queensland Transport / Main Roads put out a book giving the location of free camp sites and the facilities they provide.

There is also a mob called Camps Australia Wide who have just put our a book with campsites
and park detail by the thousand - cost about $35 and worth it.

We found Kings Creek station at $10 a head a better deal the the rip off parks at Uluru and Kings Canyon.
You might also get a cheaper "second hand" three day pass at Curtain Springs too

www.eb=nv.qld.gov.au/environment/recreation
There is no cost an it gives all rest areas advise on where you can camp for free an what facilities are provided.
