hi . does anyone know what needs to be done to upgrade my 80 series towing capacity. it is a 05/95 model gxl 1hz. at the moment it is recieving a pacemaker, rebuild, with turbo rods and pistons, switzer turbo, denco cooler, gas,and has well over $17,000 of extra's but it weigh's 3,030 kg's already and the car had 1 person in it and the 110 litre waeco wasn't even in it. neither was any luggage. i can up grade it's vehicle capacity to 3,350 kg's but i loose on it's towing capacity.it is rated at 2,500 kg's. so i need to upgrade it's towing capacity to 3,500 kg's as iam looking at towing an offroad kedron which weigh's, in total, 2,800 kg's. any comment's or other would be very appreciated. thanks. buddha.

G'day John,
This has been looked into in depth on some forums. The bottom line was it couldn't be done. Toyota increased the tow rating at the end of 1996 to 3500kgs without any structural changes but I haven't heard of anyone having the rating upgraded on previous models. If you find a way I would really like to know myself. I have an Aug 1996 gxl 1hz.
When you see smaller lighter vehicles with greater towing capacity, it makes no sense.

Cheers,
Bill

john,
The other day I seen an 80 series come through here pulling a Kedron van and it had twin rear axles fitted. I think thats about the only way you will get the extra weight up grade you need.
Cheers Dave..

LOL sorry forgive me. We have been there with no results about 12 months ago. The old girl is a 92 T/D that has been re built with the upgraded rear Kaymar bar springs even 16" wheels. Main roads wanted a form 5 completed. To get that you need a engineer to have a look. I was even asked by main roads to get a letter from Toyota (yeh right). So in the end we gave up on the bigger van. Bought another house and have gone back to a camper trailer. Please MM us if you find a Legal way through the maze. Cutting corners wont help when the Insurance company tries to ( heaven forbid) get out of writing off a Kedron.
Cheers

I got my 2006 GU Patrol ute upgraded .... I got the GCM upgraded from 5700 kg to 6200 kg (which is what the newer 3 litre utes were plated at) ... with the GVM UNCHANGED , this means towing capacity is increased from 2500 to 3000 kg ..... This can't be done unless the vehicle has had the chassis altered from standard - then a signatory engineer can inspect & sign off for the licensing dept .

Guy , I had the rear spring towers reinforced (with the kit supplied by ATOC - google them - welded on by a coded welder) I had some transverse bracing fitted - after market suspension installed ... a Signatory Engineer in WA inspected & signed the documents .... the main point being that the vehicle was now the same as the 3 litre utes (rated at 6200 kg GCM by Nissan ) ..... DPI (WA licensing) accepted & amended license papers to reflect upgrade , had to get a new compliance plate made & fitted , then advised insurance company who added this to documents .
