Mitsubishi L300 4WD van

Submitted: Wednesday, Feb 27, 2002 at 00:00

Jackie Stallard

We're considering buying a Mitsubishi L300 van but have heard that it's a rough ride on dirt roads. Does anybody have any comment on this? If so, can we make modifications to improve the comfort?

Jackie,

the L300 is based upon Pajero/Triton mechanicals and is therefore pretty capable. The rough ride comes as a result of two engineering decisions.

1) The vehicle is a van and as such is expected to carry a reasonable payload. Like all commercial vehicles (NB utes) if you have a bit of weight in the back it settles the ride down a treat. If you are going to be touring in the L300 then you will have enough camping etc gear to provide that weight, so the ride should not be an issue.
2) The other issue is the "cab forward" design which means that you are sitting over the front axle and not carried between the axles as you are in most vehicles. This is something that you will have to live with.

What can you do to improve things? Well the best thing to do is give the suspension a good going over and at the very least replace the shock absorbers with some quality gear. This will increase control and give you the best quality ride you can get.

It may be overkill, but Rancho 9000 shocks can be provided with remote ride adjusters so that you can tune the damper performance as you drive.

Good luck.
