Uniden 27meg/UHF radio

ANDREW LUNDY

Has anyone purchased and used the new Uniden 27meg/UHF cb radio, Tandy stores, about $499. This is a combined AM/UHF transceiver.

Got one for Fathers Day last.Only moderate use to date and works quite well.Will get the big test in July/August when I head Oodnadatta/ Cameron Corner.Will be interesting to see how the Repeater system works.The dual monitor system has come in handy.I live in the South of Sydney and can pick up Richmond area and North of Hornsby on UHF. Can't offer any more at this stage.

In my experience unidens need annual tuning by a radio tech to work properly. For my money I'd get a GME TX3200 (RRP $375) and if you need AM as well get a $80 set from Dick Smith. The GME radios are virtually unbreakable and Australian made.

The GME TX 4400 is also an excellent set. Great range - had over 200km with repeater and it has Selcall. If you really want 27meg the only type worth buying is one which has single side band as well as AM. Uniden make the best of these types. GME is the best bet for UHF.

Do you have a site that details this UHF/27 meg machine ? As the others mentioned, you have to have single side band on the 27 meg unit - not much use without it - with SSB, you can get a long way in good conditions - from Central Oz to Hobart - from Ceduna to NZ even - all depends on conditions - if the Uniden does not have SSB on board, you would be better off with two radios.
