2.8 Hilux diesel problem

Hi all

When the engine is at full thottle for a little while it starts to miss\loose power\blow smoke. Often if you throttle off the engine dies, but slowly lowering revs it stays running.

I have replaced air filter\fuel filter etc.

I noticed some diesel being sprayed from one of the injector nuts, so tightened and prob went away.

Prob back again and all pipes from pump tight and nut under pipe tight.

Can I put a thread sealer on these items to seal the pressure and stop and movement?

Is there a chance a leak comes from somewhere else on these that is easy to fix.

I think it looses pressure in the fuel delivery side of things that causes it to gasp?

Anyone with same prob or ideas to fix will be much appreciated.

dont try to use any forms of thread sealers or tapes on the injector side of the pump or for that matter on the pump side of the filter....... it may come free and block an injector ... all those parts are metal to metal sealed and dont need any great force to seal either, over tight will warp it and leak..

I dont know if the Hilux has it in the pumps but try this...
The fuel injector pump will have a steel pipe that supplies the fuel pump with fuel it will/should be on the top of the pump, undo the BOLT that holds the end of the pipe to the pump and also acts as the delivery point to the pump, the bolt will be hollow, it should have 2 ali or copper washers on either side to seal the fuel in, dont lose them, remove the bolt and pipe, it may have a bracket else ware so dont force it, get a light and try to look down into the pump through this hole, down about 10-15mm you "may" find a S/Steel fine mesh filter, it will be shaped like a very small thimble, if it is there it will be blocked with very fine hairs and "stuff" from the pipe work from the filter to the pump, it is there to stop any bits that fail from the inside of the hoses and filter that are on the pump side of the filter...
It can be hard to get out but a fine steel "pick" is the best way, it will come out GENTLY so dont force it.... clean it and replace it back, dont leave it out......
Hope you find it and if blocked will solve ya problem

had similar issues a few years ago and it turned out to be sucking air through a pinhole in the rubber diaghram at the top of the fuel filter/primer pump assembly. it was the last thing i checked of course. if you take both inlet and outlet hoses off you can blow through them both to see if there's any leaks.

also check all fuel lines for holes and sucking air. you can do this by making a airtight seal around the filler pipe and pressurising weith compressed air with someone underneath looking for any fuel spraying out of the leak if there is one.

ity's likely that you have a combinatyion of problems and the leaky injector line was the final straw. the injector pump actually sucks uip way more fuel than is needed for most running (lots gets returned to the fuel tank via the smaller return fuel line) so if it is starving of fuel there's a reasonable chance that it signals a pretty serious air leak. at low revs it'll keep the fuel supply up but as soon as you open the throttle it can't becasue instead of sucking fuel into the pump it's sucking a bit of air.

if you follow the advice in the previous post be VERY GENTLE removing the nut and tube that enters the injector pump. mine broke when i removed it and it was a tricky solder job to fix it up. mine didn't have a mesh filter in it anyway so i wouldn't bother checking that until you've exhausted all other options.

air leaks can be hard to find so good luck.

Having spent many hours on a customers car chasing a very similar problem changing filters filter bodies cleaning fuel tanks etc before being advised of this mesh by a fellow mechanic.I cleaned this mesh and fixed the problem.
for the amount of time it takes i would make this mesh my first priority

I can say that i only know of it as it happened to me, it would cruise at 90-105 fine, as soon as i wanted to pass something it died, crusing was fine.. got home it also would push out heaps of white and black blobs of smoke if i revved it hard in the "driveway"....
Anyway, long story short ..... did all filters, hoses, lines ect and boss told me about the "little" filter, i even pulled it all off and SWORE i could not see one in it and and put it all back togeather, must have loosend it up as it went well for a few weeks then the same s$%t happened...
Boss said to pull it off and take a better look, it was WAY down deep and REALLY hard to see, took a bit to get out with a sharp pick and was blocked with "hairey crud" ............. went like a rocket for 3 years, drowned it and then it bujjered the pump with water ...
Mazda Bravo by the way....

Check your air inlet hose, Ill bet its colapsing under full power. From memory it should have a wire spring inside it but sometimes they get removed and the hose will suck in under power.Symptoms are as you describe.

Yep tend to agree with this quite common on the 2.8 lux

Also in the hilux, the mesh screen is under the idle stop solenoid, not the large banjo bolt.
Solenoid is to the rear of the pump hiding under that rubber cover with a wire hanging out.
Will most likely need a new o ring to seal it up again too.

Is there only onr mesh screen then in the hilux? and if so is it the fuel cut off solenoid mesh?

Okay
Removed the fuel stop solenoid and the mesh filter was perfect, put back together fine.

Have cracked the nut on the inlet pipe to the injector pipe and it is a bolt sticking up with the inlet pipe around the bolt.

I dont have time to remove the bracket and lift the inlet pipe off the bolt but I am right in assuming the bolt will have a hole in it for the fuel to enter and inside that will be another mesh?

See image for view of inlet bolt setup.

Well, todays drive to/from work went rather well.
Had more power than ever and did not skip a bit, early days yet though. I will give it a few months before declaring the saga over.

On the fuel stop solenoid filter there was a tiny bit of gunk on one area, but I did not think much of it.

I did pump fuel through it and the banjo bolt when they were off which may have also fluched any bits lurking in the pipe openings.

Will advise how she is going soon

Okay, worked fantastic for a week and has come back again.

Problem appears in any gear with full or close to full throttle under load mostly.

At about 3200 revs and above it starts to missfire? or runs rough, loses power and billows a blueish smoke, quite significant amounts!

bring the revs down and it runs fine. Then the next startup it takes a few more revs to start?

Does this sound like a fuel starvation problem/air leak.

Does the injector pump have a vaccuum advance?

Could it be an injector playing up?

Does anyone know a good\reputable diesel mechanic in Perth, northern suburbs preferably that you can recommend.

Thanks in Advance

You are blowing oil under pressure.
Head or pistons: make a compression test and test for crack in the head
good luck

Stu, get some clear hose, and put it before the fuel filter/ and after the filter to the fuel pump.
check for air leaks, my money is on the priming pump.

Best to check for air, if none found, move on to the next step.

Surprising how a small air leak can affect performance, and give issues.

Thanks Trainslux, will go to bunnings on way home and get some. Are you suggesting to bypass the primer pump/filter with hose or just replace black hose with clear hose to see if bubbles are present?

If this shows nothing, then the mechanics it is.

Hi All

Well so far so good.

Went and bought some replacement fuel hose/clamps and clear hose.

Replaced the old fuel hose with new fuel hose - result no change

Placed a length of clear hose before and after fuel filter and wow, heaps of large bubbles after fuel pump, minor little bubbles before pump.

Removed pump, bought new filter and orings and went to see Kim at total fuel injection.

He cleaned out fuel filter priming pump head/valve (plenty of crap in it), replaced filter/orings and sent me on my way without charge, great guy, great service.

Reinstalled with clear pipes and no more bubbles from the filter, minor ones before pump.

Replaced clamp on fuel line between rigid pump and flex hose near tank and all bubbles gone.

Test drive went great so fingers crossed problem solved.

Will give it some down the freeway to work next and see how it goes over 3000 rpm (not that it should go over that, but nice to know it works when you need it)

Thanks to everyone for their posts and referals esp trainslux and Stuart P.
