Where to buy Tirfor (VIC)

Hi all,

I ended up buying a second hand "Big Haul" winch last week, just tried to pull the wifes CRV up the driveway & the winch wouldn't pull !

The winch is in excellent condition & the previous owner came over to my place and tried it himself, also with no success. He refunded my money.

Lucky I tried this at home and not out in the bush.

Anyway I'm in the market for a Genuine Tirfor.

Any recommendations on where to buy one at the right price and a rough price indication would be appreciated.

I'm guessing that the 516 model is the one to go for.

I find it hard to beleive that the big hall couldnt do the job , are you sure you were operating it correctly ? it should have been strong enough to pull it with the hand brake on lol . There could be a posibility that it was miss used or faulty . 10 points to the guy that re funded your money , most would have said bad luck . Makes you wonder why he sold it . Venus Bay

I bought it from a fellow forum user (another forum) and the reason he came over to my place to assist was that every time he used it he had no issues. The winch looked like it had hardly been used.

A new big haul that works when you buy it would still be better value than a tirfor. I have one of them Big Haul winches and its worked well for me for three years several uses pulling out stumps and things, even used it a couple times to pull me out of a bog. Ther has to be some simple reason it wouldnt pullLaterally Literal

I had problems with mine in dusty/dry conditions (pulling tree stumps, not cars) and it was due to dust on the cable not letting the jaws grip the cable properly. Poured some water in, as I had no wd40, and was back in business.

You did release the jaw hold open thingy (yellow T handle) so the jaws can grab the cable? :-)

We tried everything but still no pulling, when we tried the front handle the cable reversed out perfectly !

ARB have Tirfor about $700. Steer clear of others as Tirfor are the benchmark in this field.

Down at the 4x4 show ARB were demoing a magnum hand winch and i thought it looked the goods. I would have got one if i didnt already have the Tirfor T516 (never had a problem with it). But any way the Tirfor cost me $750, and they had these magnums at the show for $300 (probly about $400 RRP) I think they are ratted about the same as the Tirfor T516, and i dont think ARB would be making a big song and dance about em if they were bleep .More drive'n less talk'n

Ask them for a discount as they sell retail if you do not have an account. You should get aat least 20% off with a bit of negotiation.
