Tyre Repairs

Submitted: Saturday, Nov 01, 2003 at 17:50

Richard

Damn,

Got a punture the the other day on a tubless steel belt thats pretty close to needing replacing. Whatever caused it has gone but looks like a large nail like object which went through the road surface of the tyre. Haven't used one of the tyre repair kits before but am interested in how reliable a straight plug is without removing the tyre and putting on a patch.

Hey Richard,
I have used them for a few years now, I find them to be a "must Have" every time i hop in my 4wd, they sit in my glove box just incase. Also handy for around town, you just never know when you need them. Most of my flat tyres have been around town although i have a 12V compressor in my 4wd just incase im off road, I'm never too far from a tyre guage in a service station. Sure has saved me expensive repairs. Never had a problem.

Plugs are only to get you out of trouble in an emergency, all punctures in tubeless tyres should be fixed with a tubeless patch inside the tyre or put a tube in.

I always carry Tirepliers, with a fully stocked repair kit with plugs and patches and a couple of spare tubes also.

Mate the only word of caution is that when you ream out the hole to clean it that you dont overdo it try and keep the hole as small as possible. Ive had 2 plugs in 2 tyres for 3 years now the tyres need replacing but the plugs are working well.
