correct 4wd for my needs...

hello, my name is volts, and i live in the philippines. came across this very informative forum while searching for some tips on buying the right 4WD for my needs, which are:

1. towing a small flatbed trailer filled with produce.
2. traversing flooded and *very* rough roads.
3. fuel-efficient diesel for those long drives to the market in the city capital

since i live in a tropical country, with lots of rainfall, my perfect 4WD would have to do a lot of mud plowing. currently i'm evaluating a few imports (my guess is that they are from australia and NZ), although i can't seem to make up my mind on which is the best. i'd want a 4WD that could last a LONG time (since i envy some old timers here who still drive their 70's era landcruisers and love em). my choices are (quite limited based on finances):

1. prado EX
2. pajero '96
3. patrol '96

also, could someone point me to some sites which list known problems with the above vehicles.

your input would sure help me a lot. thanks in advance!

The choice is simple, get the Patrol. By 96 the GQ Patrol was 8 years into its model life and all faults had been ironed out. The 4.2 litre naturally aspirated diesel is as tough as nails and will go forever if well maintained. The others have turbocharged diesels which are wonderful, but are not cheap to fix (we're talking thousands). The Patrol has live axles front and rear which makes it far better off road than the other two. In general terms the Patrol is a big, tough, virtually bullet proof beast of a thing. The other two are great vehicles and are popular in Australia because they are more car-like, but for the purposes you have in mind, they will break long before the Patrol.

Go to forum and type Patrol into "keywords" and check previous dialogue. I had a look today and there are contributors who have had 600,000 km out of a diesel Patrol.

Japan has lots of low klm landcruisers nissuns and pajeros.Nice and close to you so the shipping charges will be low. You need to find a reputable car dealer who can handle it for you.The cars have a condition report that is numbered 1-5 and is strictly monitored by govt inspectors.Unfortunately you would not get that from Australia or NZ.You can find lists of them by doing a search for japanese car exports or something similar
