Insurance for grey imports

Hi people.
My brother is considering buying an imported Nissan. His current insurer is AAMI, but they have told him that they do not insure imported vehicles. I know a lot of forum users out there have grey imports - can anyone give feedback about insurance? Thanks in advance!

You don't say where you are in Aus.
In Qld my Terrano is insured with Suncorp but I was insured through Torque (a broker).
Suncorp charge a large excess ($1000) but the premium is OK.
One of the annoying quirks of imports.

NRMA insures my Terrano but they will only do market value not agreed value
Cost me $600 a year, insured as a business vehicle. It is cheaper for private use.

AMMI have insured my ex NZ ex Jap import without any problems and carried out a small claim willingly, in fact they were a lot more helpful than my insurers in New Zealand.

Thankyou all for your input. Just another thought for anyone insured with AAMI. I know a guy who has a very nice custom ute which was badly damaged in the Sydney hailstorms last week and which was covered by AAMI. He had AAMI's lifetime no-claim bonus, but has now been told that he will lose the lifetime no claim bonus because his vehicle is classed as a commercial vehicle.....!
