Kumho AT825 Tyres

Submitted: Friday, Mar 15, 2002 at 00:00

Mark

I am considering purchasing these tyres, has anybody used these? They are a budget, less aggresive AT tyre. I don't do a lot of 4wdriving, but don't want road tyres.

Have just put a set of AT825 on my discovery Td5.
Have only done about 2000ks on road and about 500 off road. They are a bit noisier than the michelins I had but otherwise OK so far.

I'd be very cautious about using Khumo. I think they're in the same league as Hancook. At about 60,000 I had Hancooks go out of round and they couldn't be balanced correctly. Mind you if you are putting them on a Disco as Tubbie did they shouldn't be a worry. At 60,000km they'll have either outlived the Disco or you'll have far more worrying problems than out of round tyres.
Go for BFGoodrich All Terrain - all serious 4wdrivers do I think.

Bill, was your demeaning comment on the Discovery really necessary?? People come on this forum to receive and give advice - not to have their choice of 4WD derided by rednecked wankers like you. And no - I dont own a disco - I just support the right of people to choose whichever 4WD suits their purpose. Get a life Bill!!!!

Hey bad tempered Dennis I wasn't having a go at you or your Disco!!! I was just having a friendly dig at Tubbie. I'm quite sure I know him and he'll understand and have a laugh at the joke. I'd appreciate it if you would mind your own business!! This was a follow up to Tubbie, not a forum answer. Put a smile on your face.

Thanks guys! BFG do not make the tyre in the size that I am after. Plus the emphasis is on 'Budget'. I would be reasonably happy with 60K, as that is how long the original Bridgestone Dueler 691's will last anyway. My car is not a Disco, and I agree with you Dennis & Tubbie!

Mark, I had Kuhmo tyres on a FJ45 troopy a few years ago, don't know the model, but they were fitted when it was our S.E.S. recovery vehicle. They only had a couple of thousand kms on them when 2 of the 4 fitted, destroyed themselves on the birdsville track on our first trip and as we know, that is not a particularly tough track. I have since done the Birdsville 3 times, as well as many other much tougher tracks, on BFG A/Ts without a puncture. If they are not available in your size then try Bridgestone or Coopers. I had a terific run with Kuhmo on road cars but will not fit them off road again. Happy trails, Mike.

Thanks Mike. The size I'm after is odd, so no BFG or Bridgestone, but thare are Cooper ST available. These are the two I will look at. The Kumho's are $160 each, the Coopers $210. So for a set of five, thats $250. I just have to weigh it up, and your experience is exactly the kind of feedback I am after. Thanks!
