Like many people I have updated my Camps 5 to the newCamps 6. In looking at it I decided to see what was new and transfere my old notes to the new book. Here are some interesting results:

Sites: QldCamps 5 = 935Camps 6 = 935
NSWCamps 5 = 1200Camps 6 = 1199
VicCamps 5 = 712 Camps 6 = 715
TasCamps 5 = 270Camps 6 = 270
SACamps 5 = 715Camps 6 = 865
WACamps 5 = 766Camps 6 = 768
NTCamps 5 = 215Camps 6 = 214

The number of new sites in camps 6 is 153. 150 being in just SA.

So if you are thinking of updating and spending a well earned $89 for the snaps book. Stick to Camps 5 and give the remaining money to BP, Shell or Caltex somewhere around highway 1.

Some of you might be thinking, well many sites have been dropped and new ones put in their place? No... this is not the case. Sites are almost identical.

Other might think, pictures have been updated however in the Snaps book...... No not the case either. I compared sites and pictures as well. Ok there are 4967 sites in the book and I did not compare every single one.

Some of you might be thinking, he has far too much time on his hands? You might be right as well.

Hi Carlsp,

On the other hand if you are going to South Australia for a tour around then it would be well worth the update I suppose.

As I will be doing just that in October I guess I will spend the dough and I might even save the purchase price in that one holiday.

I updated from 4 with snaps to 5 without, so I might just go for the snaps again.

Cheers, Bruce.

Gday...

I have only had a very quick look at Camps 6, and I did not like the new way they have laid out the details of the site compared to Camps 5.

I realise I have got used to the Camps 5 layout, but I did not like the way the info was presented, I had to study it to get the information.

Just a personal point of view - but it stopped me from updating.

Given the carlsp's info/research - may not be value for money to update - as long as they keep the updates/corrections on the website - but I would not go without my Camps 5.

Cheers and happy free-camp travelling
John

If you havecamps 5 and want upgrade, best buy "Camping around Australia". Its more for good camp sites rather than "off the road , bay type sites that Camps 5 has. The only downside of the Camping around Australia is there are no GPS co-ordinates, but the directions to get to sites is pretty good. Maybe they will add these in the next publication upgrade.. Camping around Australia is pretty good value at the moment. I just noticed at the EO shop its only $24.35. Its really worth the buy at that price. Michael

This must mean that with us still using Camps 3, we must have cleaned up big time ! To be frank, the navigator has made so many location specific chicken scratchings in our number 3 that she is loath to get a new one (pause for a sigh of resignation).

Hi Darian

I spend a few hours transcribing my notes from Camps 3 to Camps 5 before #3 went into the recycling. A number of places i had seen and made notes on in #3 were no longer camping in #5, which had also many many more places added. Perhaps they have got them all listed now hence no major changes with #6. With Camp 3 i found that basic roadside rest areas weren't listed if there were better alternatives nearby, but even small rest areas were included on routes where there was nothing else. I don't know if similar applies with the subsequent versions.

I think it may be a bit unfair just to compare the number of sites in 6 to 5
Its the info that is important
eg many sites have been closed and new ones opened up
