Hi everyone,

for those of you planning on travelling near these places, we arrived in Marla this afternoon after spending the last few days on the Oodnadatta Track. The prices for diesel were as follows

Marree - $1.95 per litre
William Creek - $2.20 per litre
Oodnadatta - Pink Roadhouse $1.98 per litre
Marla - $1.84 per litre.

We had fantastic weather with clear days and cold nights, the road was in much better condition than we had expected to William Creek and a bit rough in places north of there.

No problems with either our Navara or Jayco sterling outback van. However friends travelling with us did not cover their rear canopy window with cardboard as we did, and had it shattered by a deflected rock just south of Oodnadatta.

Have been cleaning kilos of red dust out of the van and back of the ute for the past few hours.

Had a wonderful time - so much to see and interesting campgrounds. Wonderful scenery.

We stayed in Farina, Coward Springs, William Creek, Oodnadatta for one night (had intended staying two but the powered sites were $32 per night and when we needed power early in the morning for breakfast and heating, it went off and stayed off! In other ways it was a very ordinary caravan park and we would not recommend it) .
Had a wonderful free bush camp about 7 kms from Oodnadatta last night alongside Neales Creek at Hookeys waterhole and should have stayed at Algebuckina waterhole too, it was beautiful.
If in the area don't miss the Painted desert between Oodnadatta and Coober Pedy.
There are many, many mice in William Creek.
Regards,

Heather

Hi Heather. That is sounding like an exeptional trip so far. I have a similar van to yours but my fridge vents are up the front end so I'm guessing you have a front bed. Just curious to know if you have any idea where the dust has come in. IE, from vents in the side or from underneath the van. Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,

We think the dust which turned the rear corner ensuite from white to orange mostly came in up the water (sullage) pipes through the drain holes for the basin.

Also lots under the fridge through the vens I guess, also one side of the base of the door despite us covering the vents there with cardboard, some from around the exhaust fan above the stove! Some drawers and cupboards escaped and I havent bothered looking in all of them yet.

Not too worried by it all....far too interested in checking emails, visiting EO and Facebook. Lol.

We are planning more trips off the bitumen before we return home so theres not too much sense in wasting time cleaning.

Regards,

Heather

Thanks Stephen,

Yes...I have wanted to travel the Oodnadatta track for years and am so glad we have achieved it. It was a living history lesson!

I have been taking notes and have hundreds of photos as a record of our trip so far.

Will have to edit and get them put into a blog... not sure how often we will have 3G signal although I guess there will be no problems while we are at Yulara for a few days soon. Just have to make time between walks.

Apparently we HAVE to be somewhere with TV coverage of the State of Origin Football (Rugby League) match tomorrow night..for the three others travelling with me, so we are going on to Erldunda to stay and hope they aren't disappointed. It isnt a priority for me but to keep the peace...I will go along with it.

Regards,

Heather

G'Day Heather,

How was your stay at Coward Springs, I found it a real Oasis...... until the sun went down!

Then I've never seen an influx of insects like it, it was seriously unbelievable, there was no option of sitting outside, I felt a bit like Will Smith in that movie "I am Legend" even once inside the camper you could here the buzz of insects, and the sound of larger ones banging into the canvas of our camper trying to get into the light!

I decided then that the place was aptly named, because there was no way I was brave enough to spend a second night there!

Cheers....Browny

Hi Browny,

Coward Springs was lovely....great campsites privately screened by trees. We shared a roomy site with our fellow travellers (another couple) had a campfire and dinner cooked in the camp oven (as we have done most nights in the last week).

The nights this time of the year are a bit cool for insects and I don't recall seeing any. I think it was about 4 degrees there in the morning..not as cold as Farina the previous day where the morning temp was 2.5 inside our van and too cold for our butane gas canister to work in the gas heater.
I had to pre warm the van by turning the gas oven on and leaving the door open for a while.

Regards,

Heather

standard butane won't vaporise under about 5 degrees - try Iso Butane, available from Big W - it works to about -5 degrees

Thanks for that information BFreer,

The canisters I originally bought with the heater worked well too but I havent been able to find them anywhere else. I think they were 'Elemental' brand.
I hope theres a Big W in Alice Springs otherwise we may not see any town with one until we get home in a couple of months. Will 'google' it

Heather

Elemental brand were great as they were a mix of 80% butane and 20% propane and would vaporise down to about -12 degrees but are no longer available in Australia. Isobutane is the next best. Living at 3000' above sea level I know how hopeless straight butane is doing winter.

The closest Big W to Alice is in Port Augusta so will ask around when we get to Alice and see if I can locate any in other retail outlets. Otherwise we will use the gas oven to heat the van up a little, add an extra layer of clothing and then light up the heater.

Thanks for that. It's really useful for our travels in that direction in 4 weeks.

And for your response to our thread.
