Hi everyone,
for those of you planning on travelling near these
places, we arrived in
Marla this afternoon after spending the last few days on the
Oodnadatta Track. The prices for diesel were as follows
Marree - $1.95 per litre
William Creek - $2.20 per litre
Oodnadatta -
Pink Roadhouse $1.98 per litre
Marla - $1.84 per litre.
We had fantastic weather with clear days and cold nights, the road was in much better condition than we had expected to
William Creek and a bit rough in
places north of there.
No problems with either our Navara or Jayco sterling outback van. However friends travelling with us did not cover their rear canopy window with cardboard as we did, and had it shattered by a deflected
rock just south of
Oodnadatta.
Have been cleaning kilos of red dust out of the van and back of the ute for the past few hours.
Had a wonderful time - so much to see and interesting campgrounds. Wonderful scenery.
We stayed in
Farina,
Coward Springs,
William Creek,
Oodnadatta for one night (had intended staying two but the powered sites were $32 per night and when we needed power early in the morning for breakfast and heating, it went off and stayed off! In other ways it was a very ordinary caravan park and we would not recommend it) .
Had a wonderful free
bush camp about 7 kms from
Oodnadatta last night alongside Neales Creek at
Hookeys waterhole and should have stayed at
Algebuckina waterhole too, it was beautiful.
If in the area don't miss
the Painted desert between
Oodnadatta and
Coober Pedy.
There are many, many mice in
William Creek.
Regards,
Heather

G'Day Heather,
How was your stay at
Coward Springs, I found it a real Oasis...... until the sun went down!
Then I've never seen an influx of insects like it, it was seriously unbelievable, there was no option of sitting outside, I felt a bit like Will Smith in that movie "I am Legend" even once inside the camper you could here the buzz of insects, and the sound of larger ones banging into the canvas of our camper trying to get into the light!
I decided then that the place was aptly named, because there was no way I was brave enough to spend a second night there!
Cheers....Browny

Hi Browny,
Coward Springs was lovely....great campsites privately screened by trees. We shared a roomy site with our fellow travellers (another couple) had a campfire and dinner cooked in the
camp oven (as we have done most nights in the last week).
The nights this time of the year are a bit cool for insects and I don't recall seeing any. I think it was about 4 degrees there in the morning..not as cold as
Farina the previous day where the morning temp was 2.5 inside our van and too cold for our butane gas canister to work in the gas heater.
I had to pre warm the van by turning the gas oven on and leaving the door open for a while.
Regards,
Heather

standard butane won't vaporise under about 5 degrees - try Iso Butane, available from Big W - it works to about -5 degrees

Thanks for that information BFreer,
The canisters I originally bought with the heater worked
well too but I havent been able to find them anywhere else. I think they were 'Elemental' brand.
I hope theres a Big W in
Alice Springs otherwise we may not see any town with one until we get
home in a couple of months. Will 'google' it

Heather

Elemental brand were great as they were a mix of 80% butane and 20% propane and would vaporise down to about -12 degrees but are no longer available in Australia. Isobutane is the next best. Living at 3000' above sea level I know how hopeless straight butane is doing winter.

The closest Big W to Alice is in
Port Augusta so will ask around when we get to Alice and see if I can locate any in other retail outlets. Otherwise we will use the gas oven to heat the van up a little, add an extra layer of clothing and then light up the heater.
