Jackaroo LSD additive

Hi all,

Does anyone out there use straight LSD oil, grade 85W-140, without the Holden LSD additive in their Jackaroo diffs? I'm getting a but suspicious as to why it's required to be added to oils that are already formulated for LSD's.

The rear diff in Jackaroos from mid 99 and older is actually a Dana unit, whereas from late 99 and newer it is an Isuzu diff. This is why lockers are hard to come by for the rear of the newer Jackaroos. However, Holden/Isuzu specify the same LSD additive to be added to LSD gear oil for both diffs.

I'd like to find out what others are doing with their Jack diffs. If they are not using the additive and are just using LSD 85W140 such as Penrite or Castrol, are they experiencing any problem?

Savvas, I once put non-LSD oil in my old rodeo LSD diff and found it would bind up when accelerating/turning tight around corners (good for extra traction - but don't know what damage/wear it does) and ended up putting that little container of Holden additive in. It worked straight away and I never had any problems again. So maybe the LSD clutch pack on the newer jacks is a bit tighter and they need extra additive in the oil over the standard stuff. Hope this is of some help.

I own a 93 MU with the Isuzu (Jackaroo LSD) fitted. Didnt know, drove for about 80k km with many oil changes, standard Hypo 90 gear oil. Understandably started to chatter, thought the diff was U/S pulled it out and realised it was an LSD.
Spoke to a specialist and he said throw it back in, use top quaility LSD oil (VMX 80 i think) and see how it goes, if it still chatters, then add some LSD additive.

Worked like a charm with out the additive and if it starts chattering again, new oil and the additive will go in. Not bad for two years and 80 000km of abuse with wrong oil!!!

Hi Savvas, if you have a lsd then you should always use an lsd oil preferably high quality stuff. The holden additive you refer to is a gm part which from my previous experience working at holden is used to help keep the cone and seat faces free from build up . Half of the people at the dealership hadn't seen it or used it , which is a worry as it is stated in the service book !! I have previously used it in my jack and have no shudder or sticking in the diff centre and really good lsd action still ( 120k).

My new rodeo work ute had a virtually fully locked diff from new which the ignorant dealers could'nt fix. At 8k i changed the oil and had it tested , apart from being filthy it had a viscosity range that our lab could'nt identify, their best guess was a blend of different oil types was used. Not Happy Jan. filled the diff with some of our fully synthetic 75-140 LSD oil and within 10 ks the diff was fully operational and quiet as a mouse. Demanded some quality control answers from holden but surprise surprise , still waiting........

My advice is to use the additive if you are using lower quality mineral oil, but don't add it unless you have to with synthetic LSD oil. Anyway, how often do you change the diff oil , You might as well use the best stuff you can get, spread the cost over 40k or more , it is stuff all.
