Well when was the last time you saw a roo in Gladstone Park?

I've often wondered if those things work.

Bought mine from Supercheap, cost around $4 only. Never hit a roo in some really infested areas, so I suppose they work. Probably have to be doing a certain speed to get air flowing through them to create the whistle noise.
Wouldn't pay hundreds, but being electric they would work at all speeds.
Wonder how you can see them work?

G'Day Wazza,

Wazza,

I've only ridden in one vehicle fitted with a Shu Roo (electric not the little wind driven ones). It was from a Gas Plant south of Onslow to Karratha. The fisrt part of the trip was approximately 40km off road through country heavily infested with roos.

The Shu Roo had the effect of startling all the roos we saw (100's) and encouraged them to scatter. The other observation I made was the Roo’s absence of a sense of direction! They are just as likely to run at the vehicle, as away…

These things work in theory, but I’m yet to be convinced that they actually reduce roo strike.

Pluto

I know how many roos you are talking about as well, I did the trip in a taxi (minibus) when our ship pulled into Onslow and we were on the way back from the Karratha International !! Missed them with skill and finesse of the bus driver!

We lost count of the dead roos on the road between Wooramel and Carnarvon a few months ago, there were literally hundreds.
Even the truckies were talking about the amount and the shire sent the truck out earlier than usual to get them off the road a bit, or pick them up and take them wherever.
But I didn't hit one so maybe the wind driven model works. Cost so little they can stay on the bar anyway.

Its hard to tell isn't it.

Have it fitted, and never hit a roo . . . good luck or good management.

Have it fitted and hit a Roo, a once off, and just plain bad luck, or don't the things work ????

Andrew replied:

Can the roo's hear them? Yes if you are close enough (electric one's that is)
Are they effective? Probably not
Reason: An academic type did some actual research on the effective range and the effect on roos. It turns out that the range is so short that if you are travelling at any realistic speed, then you will still be on top of the roo before they can react.
The company was up in arms quoting heaps of testimonials about their effectiveness, but there is an old saying "use testimonials when the scientific evidence doesn't support you"
