Road condition Broome to Cape Leveque WA

Submitted: Tuesday, Jan 30, 2001 at 00:00

Planning to take trip to Cape Leveque while at Broome next June. Has anybody done the trip? Road is listed as 4WD, so would appreciate details of road. Is it rough or difficult and is a permit required as area is Aboriginal owned we believe. Finally is it worth the effort?

John & Kay,You do not want to miss it. We think that it one of the great places to go and relax. You should book your accomodation in Broome prior to going up at the Broome tourist office. You can also ask them for the latest on the road conditions, the road is 4WD due to it being all sand. It is really a one lane road with very soft high sandy edges, you will need to move out onto the soft edges if anything needs to pass you. Having said this the travelling is usually straight forward if you take your time. Have a look at the notes that we have on our other 4WD site at Beach & Beyond you will see some more photos and details of the area (these ae a little old now but you will get the idea). Enjoy it we think it is one of the best and the menu system photo on this web site is a photo from Cape Leveque.

You dont need a permit to travel teh road but will reuire pre-booked accomadation, tent site or what ever you desire to stay there. Very popular place and hard to rock up to and get accom. Almost any travel agency esp those in Broome to organise & book accom for you. We LOVED it. If you get the chance book a beach hut.

I took my family up there last year in May. I was told that it would take 6 hours to get there. What a load of bull that was. I took us 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The road is corrugated in parts where the speed is 40 -50 ks. Sometimes you will think you are driving down a dry river bed. There are times where you can do 100 ks no problem. I would rate it easy. The road is generally good. Just take your time. It is worth spending at least 3 days there. Go and try some fishing at hunters creek while you are there. You will catch a big fish there. Book before you go otherwise you wont get in. Its quite a popular place to go. Enjoy

We went twice last year. Once in May, once in June. Loved the place. As others have said, make sure you book. Road generally good, we towed an off road trailer. Will take about 3 hrs though... Watch out for oncoming lunatics in the narrow sections... Dont need permit.

Towed off road caravan up there Sept 2000. No problems. Just take it carefully. Try to also get to Middle Lagoon - wonderful area and good camp ground. When visiting communities like Beagle Bay, One Arm Point you are supposed to obtain permit from the community office.
