A/C In Cruiser

G'Day All,
For the last couple of months the A/C in my HZJ75 has been working when in likes to and when it is working there is a clicking noise like a solinoid continually inside from behind the dash. It doesn't matter what fan speed or setting I have the A/C on it just keeps clicking unless the A/C is turned off. Its probably a loose wire somewhere - any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Had the same problem in my troopy, it was a relay or solenoid thingamy for the air con, on its way out.

Wasn't hard to replace, once you knew what to replace.

i had the same thing in my old troopy, i think in behind the glovebox there is a black box with a small dial on it you can turn it so the air con comes on at a certain revs.my troopy was a 90 model with a 3f and when it was idling the aircon would switch off and didnt come back on until it hit 1500 rpm

The only trouble my 80 series A/C gave was when the fan hub lost it's stickinosity. The fluid inside wasn't grabbing enough to drive the fan when the temp went up. The air con has a temp switch that disengages the a/c electric clutch when the engine gets too hot. It cost me about $400 for a new hub because it happened to me while my family was doing the round Oz thing and the missus wanted it fixed that day. The very next issue of 4WD Monthly had an article on how the fluid can be replaced for about $40 and an hour or two's labour.

Situated in behind the glovebox infront of the evaporator unit is a low pressure solenoid switch which operates on the gas refrigerant in the aircon system. If the pressure is low (usually because the system needs re-gassing) the solenoid will not operate & engage the clutch on your a/c compressor. I would advise you the get the system checked for leaks & re-gas if necessary. The clicking noise you hear is possibily the solenoid cutting in & out because the gas pressure isn't high enough to hold it in permantely when the a/c is operating. Cheers. Have Wheels Will Travel
