We're now halfway between Kakadu and Kununurra, heading west, and for the past few days have been having problems with our 2002 diesel Prado not starting first time. The lights all go on, it makes a 'click' but does not start. This might happen one or three or eight time, but it does then start. Thankfully. Not sure if it is coincidental but we did go through Jim Jim Creek just before this started happening. I'll try to find an auto-electrician in Kununurra, but was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem.

ould suggest giving the starter motor a good clean. Check your connections. Most cruisers (assume prado is the same) have the starter motor fairly low. Water crossings and mud play havic with them. I'd give it a good hose down if it's dirty (maybe if it had dust all over it then add water from the crossing). Then give it all a good dose of wd40. You may need to pull connections apart and spray with wd40. I would probably guess it would be dirty brushes in the starter (think that's what they are called).
Be careful with an auto elec that they don't say it needs a rebuild, habg on to the car for 3 days and give it back with new brushes and charge for a full rebuild.

I had a 2002 3 litre turbo diesel and had the same problem which was fixed by replacing the starter soleniod contacts and plunger. The parts cost $90 and I removed the starter motor and fitted them in a couple of hours.

Hope this helps!

Sounds like the solenoid. If possible next time it happens get the wife to hold the key in the start position and climb under neath and give a slight tap with hammer on the starter, if it kicks over then definitely the starter, Not guaranteed to work but works most of the time. I never had any issues with starter in my 01 grande but did do the head at 103k so keep an eye on your cooling system..........

Very very good point Bill, would be a very easy accident to happen if not concentrating unless its auto, while were at it dont forget to lock the handbrake on as well, and in some cases chock the wheels for extra security. Good pick up Bill........................

Had the same problem with my 2002 Prado after doing a deep crossing of Eyre Creek last year. As already suggested it turned out to be water in the starter motor with some early corrosion on the solenoids

Hi Prado owners,
Just a quick question OT.
Have any of you had top replace the dash in your vehicle? From 2003 onwards they develop small cracks in the material.
I am having a discussion with Mr Toyo at the moment and would appreciate knowing if this is a large problem.

Pradopoint have 45 pages on the topic so its big I think.

Hi Bill, yes its a huge issue with the 120 prados, Doesnt seem to matter when the vehicle was built, wether its been in the sun or not, armouralled, etc some crack some dont. At the moment mine is ok. I would be using the info supplied on the pradopoint website (which Im a member of) and start getting the old printer loaded up with some ink and plenty of paper, and take along with you to Mr Toyota, some dealers are replacing at full cost to the dealer. some are charging half half, others $1500 for the dash pad and you pay labour etc so worth reading all the pages and getting the write info to print up. Some of the vehicle have huge klms some have very little, they range from the GX to the Grande.......good luck

Geez! They are horrible.
Mine are not that bad ...yet. But I have cracks in all the same places.

Thanks for posting the pics. I will use them as an example of where mine may be going.

I cannot for the life of me see why a recall hasn't been issued. If for no other reason than the cracks over the passenger airbag must be a danger if the bag goes off. There will be bits of plastic breaking off everywhere.

Thanks

Bill

Hi everyone

Many thanks for your advice. The first auto-electrician I went to wanted to replace the whole starter motor. I found another who said he would take a look first. Just the contacts that needed cleaning, brushes etc okay. So $150 and peace of mind! Really appreciate the advice - probably saved us around $500!
