I am planning to use our cast iron dutch oven on our gas stove for many meals - and would like to know where I can buy a small portable oven thermometer from? I tried Woollies - no luck. I do have a meat thermometer (probe type) - would this do?

The type they put in the covered BBQs would probably work for you, you'd just have to drill a hole in the lid of the Camp Oven. Might have to Shield it somehow so you can put hot coals on the lid.

We use a digital infrared thermometer purchased from Jaycar. You point it at your tyres or camp oven to check the temperature. Works a treat on camp fire or stove and you don't need to drill any holes. Lynne

I work in graphic arts and we use digital infra red thermometers when we heat and form graphics on vehicles, I always have in the car and often use it with the camp oven when away.
Something like this.

What's the purpose of monitoring your tyre temp?

If tyres, wheel bearings or brakes are getting significantly hotter this is a warning sign of possible problems. It is a good idea to check this when you stop along the way rather than wait for something to seize up. However, just feeling with your hand is actually quicker than using the thermometer and you soon get used to how things should feel! The thermometer mostly gets used for the camp oven now. Lynne

I use a similar bessemer pot with a vented lid on our gas cooker and find it great for a variety of meals including roasts and stews. I don't use a thermometer but an infuser to spread the heat is necessary when wanting a low, slow temperature.

BCF and many others have a simple oven thermo that you can put in the camp oven. Also try BBQ Galore
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Thankyou .......... sounds like this is what I'm after - looking forward to trialing the trusty 'oven' on top of the gas stove instead of the open fire!

Thankyou to everyone for your suggestions ....... will go for the el-cheapo version from BCF or BBQ's Galore - it sounds like the one I'm after.

Happy Holidays to one and all!

I use the probe type meat thermometer - never thought to try anything different as it works for me and has lasted a lifetime.

Ok - I did wonder if my probe meat thermometer would work ........ might just give that a try before buying another one - I rarely use this 'gadget' in the kitchen, so if I can put it to good use when camping ........ why not?!

thankyou for the suggestion, Michelle!

Cheers,

Talking to a bloke, while he was putting on a roast, a while back & I think he said he used baking paper or something to gauge his camp oven temp.
He was a bit of a camp oven fanatic. He owned 21 camp ovens & uses them as often as the average bloke uses a BBQ.
Someone else surely can enlighten us on what was traditionally used to gauge the temps.
I seem to remember my Mum talking about the colour of the baking paper being the foolproof gauge for baking cakes.

I use this

There are cheaper versions available. Works a treat for giving you the correct temperature of anything you are cooking and the wire attached to the probe is thin enough and strong enough to slide in under a camp oven lid
