You're in the right place Shane. The blogs below will also connect direct to EO "places" along the Kidson or Wapet Track as it is also known. The track is in generally good condition as far as outback highways go. The bottom sections where it meets the Telfer Road run through the samphire and salt flats of Lake Auld so can be influenced by the weather. Razor blade is a well used campsite and had running water of beaut quality. Very short on firewood though so collect some along the way if you intend to stay. None of the other bores west on the track were working at the time of our visit.

The track is a bit overgrown here and there north west of Razor blade and there will be the odd washaway. Most of this is captured in the attached video. It’s an isolated run but a good one and as it doesn’t see much traffic, it hasn’t suffered as much degradation as many other tracks.

Canning to the Kidson - west to Razorblade Bore

Kidson and into the Great Sandy

Mate, you'll need to get onto the WA DIA website. All automated these days. Follow the links from here.

DIA Permits entry point

Also, here is a link to previous queries on the Kidson and Wapet. You'll probably find some good stuff in there as well.

Kidson Track Forum Search

WAPET Track forum search

If you also check out the "Places" page on the site and tap in some of the features from the Hema maps like Razorblade Bore, you should find some info there as well.

I know a couple of EO members went this way last June/July and loved the trip. Pretty sure they'll be along shortly as well.

Do us a favour and take a few notes and photos along the way and update the track conditions/places, particularly any of the water sources when you get back.

A few more videos of the southern Kidson (and Kamels)

Enjoy mate. Mick

Not nice Mick. Seeing this makes me want to go. However "She Who Must Be Obeyed" says that at 80 years of age I am just not allowed to think of such a thing.
Beaut video though. I will watch it again and again. Dreamimg!!!!!!

Unfair Brian. unfair. I've run into quite as few adventurous & well set up octonagarians in some very out of the way places over the years. Hopefully Shane will give us an adventurous write up that we can all enjoy from our armchairs. Take care.

My attempt at humour failed. Sorry Mick. But I will watch it again. But with all due respect to those you have seen in remote places, an eighty year old with all the very best equipment is taking an almighty risk to be so far away from help.
Some poor soul may have to risk thie own life and limb to rescue them if things do not turn out right. (I have very poor health now but that is NOT offered as an excuse.)
I still think it is a great movie. Post some more, please
Regards
Brian

No it didn't fail Brian. My atempt did. I was going to add "Happy wife - happy life" but didn't know how close you lived. I didn't want to get whacked with the fry pan as well. ;-)

Hope the health improves for you.

Cheers Mick

Hi Shane Mick has it pretty well covered the only thing I can add is aproach the sandhills with some caution they have been ramped out and sheeted with gravel but this has caused some scouring and deep gutters and there will probably be a fair amount of vegetaion overhang on the track in places .
Enjoy Cheers Dave

We did the Kitson Track in August last year. The track itself as far as bush tracks go are not too bad however the scrub has overgrown the track for approximately20 - 25% of the way. Although not hard branches etc, I'd definitely cover the paintwork with one of those scratchproof coatings.
I spent several days afterwards hiding the scratches when we got home. I generally refer the scratches as character marks but the duco was fairly well abused this time.
We did come across a French couple who had become bogged at the approach to one of the sand dunes in their rental Britz and had been there for 24 hours waiting for assistance. It wasn;t hard to get him out after he dropped his tyre pressures and put it into low range. LOL.
We were towing the camper and had no issues with the track apart from the overgrown scrub.
