camper trailer stove problem

Hi all,

The stove in our camper trailer has developed a problem with one of the rear burners. It ignites perfectly (piezo ignition), but won't stay alight. We have tried holding the knob in for well over a minute or two, but as soon as we release the knob the burner goes out.

Can anyone shed some light into what may be causing this? Is it a simple fix? Or will we need to have the stove serviced?

I would probably not be concerned if it was a front burner, but, unfortunately, it is the main rear burner (the other rear one is for simmering) ....... I don't particularly like using the front burners when we are moving around inside since it feels unsafe - too easy to forget it's on, stretch over it and set clothing on fire etc. I much prefer using the rear burner and now can't .... so feel it is necessary to fix it.

Has anyone else had this problem and is it easy to fix?

Hi,

Sounds like a faulty thermocouple. They are a safety device that will shut off the gas to the burner when they dont sense heat. (IE; flame)
I would get it serviced properly........ Gas is not something I would mess with yourself unless qualified.

Agree re the thermocouple - one of ours plays up at times - the problem is common on a variety of camper and van stoves - try cleaning the thermocouple pin (it sits in the flame, to detect the heat) with a scourer - maybe a food spill has dirtied the connections underneath - no harm in having a look.

ID for the make and model of the stove would be a good idea here - other owners could comment then - I'm simply assuming that if it is a "plumbed in" stove then it will have the thermocouple pin - by each burner you have the insulated piezo igniter (ignition spark shoots out from that one, onto the burner) - commonly, another plain pin (or whatever) that actually sits in the gas flame should be somewhere around the ring. I have 4 burners on my Smev cooktop and one often plays up while the other 3 never do (sigh). I pulled that particular burner's top off and fiddled about with the thermocouple pin etc - could find nothing wrong - put it back together and it worked well for quite a while (sigh x 2). I have not been right in under the cooktop yet because it looks far too difficult to get into, for now :-o).
