I think if you were caught driving through you would be liable for a big fine (possibly 10,000). The region of concern is the Allitra Tableland which the track tangents. Yes I heard that someone desecrated a sacred site and that is why it is 'closed'. When we went through I had to do a lot of direct liaison with one of the CLC anthroplogists, who dealt directly with the owners who happened to be in town.
There is no physical barrier to just driving through, and from what we could see there was no evidence of recent travel by anyone else, but you never know. In some areas if the locals catch you without a permit they can wreck your car.Bob
