Colston Track

Does anybody know if it's possible to obtain a permit for the Colston Track?

The Colson runs north/south through the Simpson, starting at the Rig Road in the south and going north across the WAA line, the French Line and the NT border. In the NT it passes through aboriginal land for which a permit is required. I tried to get one 18 months ago and was refused, absolutely, completely, no discussion.

Our club has applied on 3 different occassions for a permit to travel the 40 klms approx that the Land Council controls and they have either refused or in two occassions did not both to reply. It is a pity that some of the families that contol these areas do not offer permits or as an alternative offer to lead your through the area and give us an insight to their history

do a search under 'Colson'. There's been a lot said in the past. We did it two years ago - it took a lot of trouble to get permission.Bob

I think if you were caught driving through you would be liable for a big fine (possibly 10,000). The region of concern is the Allitra Tableland which the track tangents. Yes I heard that someone desecrated a sacred site and that is why it is 'closed'. When we went through I had to do a lot of direct liaison with one of the CLC anthroplogists, who dealt directly with the owners who happened to be in town.
There is no physical barrier to just driving through, and from what we could see there was no evidence of recent travel by anyone else, but you never know. In some areas if the locals catch you without a permit they can wreck your car.Bob
