Updating thread 98209: The proposed tours of the weather station will be taking place thanks to the efforts of Paul Lainio. These tours will no longer coincide with the release of the weather balloon and will be conducted at 11:00 am South Australian time. This, being 9:30 am Western Standard Time and 8:30 am during South Australian Daylight Saving Time as current. This time was deemed to be the most suitable after consultation with travellers and to fit in with weather station staff commitments.

Thanks to members who had input into the discussion about best times. Although it will not be the same special experience we had, at least the tours will continue.

Hi Motherhen,

Thanks for your efforts on this one - its good to see that at least the tours will continue, though missing the balloon launch is a pity.

Cheers,

Hi Andrew

Yes, it will never be quite the same. The attention and explanations of everything as well as the balloon launch made it a really special highlight of the trip. However visitors will be able to watch the balloon reach for the sky from further away, and i gather the Visitor Room which includes Len Beadell memorabilia will still be accessible under the new arrangement. For a while it looked like the lot would be lost to us.

Thanks Motherhen,

I guess its change due to the price of progress, budget and staff cuts, workloads, safety concerns and so on.

When i visited in 1982, we had access to the whole site and were treated like royalty by the staff, with morning tea etc. They started Len's grader and drove it out of the shed and left it idling whilst we climbed on board took pics etc.

Having said that we were probably the only visitors they had seen in weeks.

regards
