Camp Meals and Sports Nutrition Supplements

Any feedback on the camp meals and sports nutrition supplements as advertised in the SHOP section of this website?

Customs are pretty strict about bringing in food and nutritional drinks from South Africa due to foot and mouth disease. I once had all my sports drinks for paragliding competitions confiscated.

I am unfamiliar with the brands adveritised. Don't think they are available in South Africa. It would be dispiriting to buy supplies and find later that the food tastes like cardboard and the energy drinks not the best.

My cooking skills are below par. On top of that, I am going to want expend as little energy as possible cooking a meal after a hard days slog. So I thought a ready prepared meal from time to time might be something I could look forward to.

I will scan the bushwalk.com forum for answers as well, but maybe exploroz members have feedback of their own?

Ok...I am assuming by the lack of feedback that prepared meals as supplied by Backpackers, Happy Camper Gourmet, Outdoor Gourmet and Backcountry are not typically chosen by 4x4 travelers. Either that, or they taste horrible.

Having been invited to a great many camp fire dinners on my trips along the Canning and Tanami, I must admit, store bought prepared meals were far and few between. Most 4x4'ers prepared and packed their own meals and deep freezed them. They were incredible.

Macadamia nuts, walking along you can quite literally feel them fizzle away in your stomach.

I myself would go the prior stack option. Put on heaps of weight prior to travelling and survive on your own body fats on your journey. Then you only need a bit of nutrition by way of a few protein fixes and maybe some bread or pasta for carbs every now and then, and maybe a few vitamin supplements.

Mind you I have never walked the distance you intend to.

Cheers

On my previous treks I lived on mostly dried fruit, nuts and some basic carbs. I cant tell you how unappetitising that all becomes after just the first week. 3-4 months.......? uh uh. i have learned my lesson. I am going to mix it up this time around seeing as I have the luxury of supply drops and a support vehicle.

I use Strive Foods, they're a Tasmania based company who do a large variety of single and double serve camp meals and freeze dried vegetable packs. I think the ones Sea to Summit ship in are okay, I sometimes use their vegetarian meals, they bring in Backpackers Pantry and Backcountry Cuisine. You can buy them easier through here than trying to get the quantities you'll need through anywhere else.

The Shotz electrolyes are the best I have ever used but i will be trying the Dextro soon. Shotz protein and energy bars are also really good.

If you check the comments and recommendations for each product in the shop you will find helpful information and feedback.

I also use a variety of powdered and dried power foods like fruits, cacao, seeds, nuts as well as chia seeds on my breakfasts.

Now I'll go back to our last conversation and follow up :)
Have you seen my marbles?

Went around to several stores in Cape Town last two days and found that Back Country, the New Zealand product, is, so far as I can tell, the only freeze dried camping food available in both South Africa and Australia. So I will be trying out a few of their meals and hopefully that will take care of some of the ready made meals.

Also doing a weeks trial with Vibrant Health, in particular Green Vibrance. It is apparently great for energy and nutrition being Gluten Free Organic Greens and Freeze Dried Grass Juices with 25 Billion Probiotics .... yum :-) I hope! If it works I think customs will allow this product through as it has no meat or dairy products in it. But will check.

I am concerned about nutritional balance over such a long time. My diet is usually fresh fruit and vegetables, something that is going to be very absent for for 3-4 months.

Tested the Back Country Thai Green Chicken Curry last night.

When I asked the salesman at the store what it tasted like, he said that I might want to add something to it as most of these meals are bland. I don't think he has ever tasted the product he is selling.

My first impression was:

Wow, that is spicy! I like spice. In fact, Thai Green Chicken Curry is one of the few meals I know how to cook. Even so, I was really suprised at how spicy. I guess heavy spicing is one way of disguising the texture and non fresh taste of freeze dried food. So at first I thought, ok, that might be alright for the trail, but at the end of the meal I did not feel satiated, nor did I want to eat the second serving, but rather was left wanting something else.

I rate trail meals as follows:

1 - Did not pass the test. Will not eat again.
2 - Would eat it if nothing else available.
3 - Will eat in conjunction with something else.
4 - Will eat for sake of variety, once or twice on the trail.
5 - Will look forward to and eat and enjoy with pleasure, several times on the trail.

With that,I give Back Country Thai Green Chicken Curry a rating of 3, as I would eat it with more rice to dilute the spice and make it more filling.

I never go on an outback trip without them but I am now used to all of the hoverers whose noses just can't let me eat in peace.Wow that smells nice!

Thanks Mary. I will have two weeks in early May for preparations in Perth and Kalgoorli so will give Happy Camper a try, and one or two other brands. Thanks for the pointer.
