Hi
to all those people planning a trip accross the Nullarbor - good news, in that we found on a recent trip a great place to spend the night in comfort. Usually this area if not stinking hot is always windy, overcast and cold. It is always difficult to find a camp spot which is protected and out of the wind.
Koonalda is 98 ks west of Nullarbor Roadhouse and the turn off is not sign posted and not easy to spot, so set your trip meters. You then drive 7 ks to the Homestead on a track that is not too bad.
Koonalda used to be a fuel stop on the original dirt road and was closed in the 1970's.
It is now empty and owned by SA National Parks.
The Homestead and cottage are made out of old railway sleepers with iron roofs.
You are allowed to stay inside free of charge.
The small cottage, probably the stockman's house, is the better place to stay as it is more cosy and partly furnished. The fire place still works too.
We connected our generator to the lead hanging down by the front door and were then able to use the house lights which are working OK. The globes are still there!
We set up our camper trailer in the lee of the house and used the cottage to cook, eat and relax until bed time.
If you travel north past the shearing shed approx 13 ks you come to the Koonalda cave which is well worth the effort.
The property is surrounded by old car wrecks which were vehicles that broke down and abandoned. The old GP sheds and workshops are are still there too.
It is a great spot to have a rest and a good Captain Cook.

Sounds like the kind of campsite we look for. Is the track in caravan friendly.

The first half of the track in has been improved recently but the crushed limestone surface is still rough/stoney. The second half is still original but smoother even though there are corrogations and pot holes, which can be avoided.
No problems for a caravan so long as you go slowly and it is not a long distance.

G'Day Shorty
another top spot to camp is Newman Rocks which is near Balladonia.
It is only a couple of k's off the highway-far enough to be quiet - no truck noises and plenty of shade, BBQ's and tables.
Free bush camping - perfect for a caravan.
Have a good trip and I hope you enjoy WA.

Thanks Peter. You don't happen to have GPS co-ordinates for the Koonalda Homestead do you? Sounds a great place. Found Newman Rocks by chance last year when travelling back to WA. Agree - it's a great place.

SteveIt's the journey not the destination that counts!
