advice needed on buying 2nd hand prado

Submitted: Wednesday, Mar 01, 2006 at 18:05

Steve & Mish

We are looking at trading our maz trib on an 03 4l prado with 130k on the clock. Looks to have been off road but seems in good nick. Thought there was a bit of a strange air intake noise which I could no longer hear after it was warmed up. In any case I will have to get someone to check it, would RACV be a good choice for this?
The sales guy says it's previous owner was the RSPCA but was a bit cagey about giving me contact details - he said I should contact the dealer it was serviced at.

130K is very high but for $31K might be a good buy.
it is the base GX model with cruise, twin a bags & ABS added. Are the steel wheels / narrow tyres etc much of a disadvantage to the alloys?
ANY feedback would be greatly appreciated
cheers

At least $22000 for the Patrol leaves some dough in your pocket for engine repairs in the future.

Hi there Steve, did you have a look in the glove box for log books etc, I wouldnt touch one without them for your own sake, you want to know yourself that it has been well serviced. I had an inspection done on a patrol few years back in melbourne by racv and they were fantastic, inspection took 3 and half hours and went over it with a fine tooth comb and had 6 page report. Some things only minor like the light above ashtray not working but thats how thorough they were. Worth the money and I didnt end up buying it as there were some major problems with it. I was here in sydney and I just rang up gave all details and within the week had it sitting in my letterbox. Only problem that I know of with the prado (not really a problem) is that there a bit thirsty, and when you go to fill it up chockers of fuel be prepared to hand over $200 + to fill it if both tanks are sitting on empty they have 180L tank standard otherwise I think there a great vehicle. Mate has the I think its called GXL middle of the range 4Litre engine and loves it. Just have a good look around plenty out there especially petrol ones.Check out some web sites just to get an idea. EG www.carpoint.com.au www.carsales.com.au www.tradingpost.com.au and dont forget the sales on this site as well. Regards Steve M

He is asking approx $25000 but I am sure you could pick it up for a fair bit less than that (he has taken delivery of his new one). Guys,
To give you a comparison .... I will be selling my 03 120 GLX this December when the lease runs out for arround $25k. It will have 120K on it, log book serviced every 10K by the dealer ($$$), it will have new tyres, Toyota bullbar, spots, roof racks, dark window tint, towbar. It is white in colour, in exellent condition, with not a mark on it. It has not done any serious off-road work as it is mainly used for towing two quad bikes about. I will be listing it on this site later in the year.
Regards,
Capt.

Hi Steve & Mish,

You don't mention whether it is an automatic or a manual. According to Redbook the price is about right for that model.

To help compare price and value, I bought a '03 GX TD manual last week off the drive.com.au site. I'm in Melbourne.

It has 64,000kms, factory ABS & crusie control added by the previous owner, ECB alloy b/bar, milford barrier & tow bar for $34,500 plus on road. All up cost $38,500, incl 12mth rego.

There are quite a few GX models on the above site, priced from low $30's to low $40's. I searched on the Prado model KZJ120R (turbo diesel & looked for manual transmission only)

cheers
