Rear main seal problems

Ive also just had my rear main seal done and a new clutch kit put in. I was wondering what causes real main seal leaks and why only after 72k. And is there a bigger problem at hand?

It can be from lack of use which can be cured by lots of use, or it can be from wear. If it ws wear they should have fitted a sleeve to the crankshaft.

Changing the seal would be more than adequate. Resleaving is only done in extreme cases where the seal has worn the crank.

I have heard that in the nissans (not sure on model ) that the flywheels are so far out of balance from new that it takes about 60-70 thou kms for the crank seal to start leaking from all the vibration!!!!!
Might be worth getting the dealer to check out the fly wheel??

Very true, when I built my engine the flywheel was out of balance, but something to be aware of is the crank, flywheel and crankshaft front pulley are balanced as one unit, to balance the flywheel alone would not fix the problem, the whole system needs to be balanced. If you really want to get the best results balancing the pistons and con rods also works well. Just a small thing I learnt. Keep the shiny side up

That is a very low k's for a rear seal, check the crankcase ventilation valve, there may be a bit of backpressure in the block. Eric.
