Description of Hillston
Hillston was settled in 1863 and is situated on the banks of the beautiful Lachlan River that flows all the way from Forbes and Cowra towards the Murrumbidgee. It's just 96km from Hillston to Mt Hope although you might like to take a few diversions in this fascinating country. The town’s rich agricultural centre supplies food and fibre to the Australian and export markets. This booming agricultural industry has been pivotal in the opening of a number of new shops, and tourist enterprises. Things to see and do in Hillston include: The Hillston Cotton Gin, which provides visitors with an insight into the cotton industry; The Red Dust and Paddy Melons Gallery in the main street, which showcases the district's talented artists and their subjects, The interesting Hillston Museum, and Lake Woorabinda, which is a man-made lake - a haven for birdlife.
