Description of Lawn Hill Gorge
Lawn Hill is accessible with trailers and caravans, although the bulldust is just as rough along the rest of the Gulf roads as here due to the constant road train traffic. Lawn Hill can also be accessed via the south from Mt Isa and now that the Riverseleigh fossil discovery has made the area prominent, more and more visitors are coming each year. If you want more information about the fossil finds at Riversleigh Station you need to see the Information Centre display at Mt Isa Tourist Information Centre.
There are 2 options for
camping at Lawn Hill; on the banks of the main gorge itself within the National Park or further upstream at the private caravan park Adel's Grove.
The main attraction is the canoeing along the gorges. Just a few metres from your camp in the National Park you can hire one or use your own. You can easily spend a day or two paddling beside the colourful walls that tower 60m above the deep green waterholes. The banks are densely fringed with rainforest plants and aboriginal art, unusual species of fauna and flora and excellent walking tracks are other attractions that will delight you. Lawn Hill is fast becoming a favourite holiday spot and advance booking is the only way to ensure you'll be able to stay. Contact: (07) 4748 5572 to contact the ranger.
It can be extremely hot at Lawn Hill and rubber tyre tubes are made available for enjoying the river as you would a swimming pool. Fresh water is available however there are no powered sites. Everything is within a short walking distance and there is no need to start your engine once you have setup camp and got settled. Generators are not allowed in the National Park and unless you use solar panels you may find trouble keeping your batteries charged and the
fridge running as there is little shade under which to park your vehicles.
Camping sites are marked off in grassed sections, but vehicles are in parking bays with little to no shade. A section out the back of the camp is designated to running your engines to recharge batteries.
