 Description of Mungindi

Mungindi is a town of approx. 700 people on the NSW/QLD border in the Moree Plains Shire. Mungindi is the only border town in the Southern hemisphere with the same name on both sides of the border. The border itself is the Barwon River which separates the town, most people take the centre of the bridge as being the border although no marker point exists. Mungindi is on the Carnarvon highway which is the shortest route between Sydney and Darwin.
Local sites include the One Ton Post which was erected by John Cameron in 1881. The post is situated 5km west of Mungindi where the border leaves the river and goes west on the 29th parallel to the South Australian Border. See signposts for directions. The Neworra historical site, situated approx. 11kms south east of town on the Carnarvon Highway is the site of an old wine shanty.
Mungindi is an agricultural region growing, cotton, beef and cereal crops.
The town has two supermarkets, newsagent, gym ,beautician, hairdresser, Dr, pharmacist,/fashion, cafe, bakery, post office, vet and two agricultural suppliers.
