Description of Devonport
Devonport is a major city that lies on the north coast of
Tasmania
where the Mersey River enters Bass Strait. Devonport is the main gateway to
Tasmania
by sea, and is the home port for the Spirit of
Tasmania
passenger ferry services connecting this island state to mainland
Australia
. Devonport also has an airport.
Devonport was formed in 1893 after the amalgamation of the two towns that used to exist as separate entities (Formby on the west bank, and Torquay on the east bank).
