Description of Bocrabee Hill
Situated on the western edge of the Little Sandy Desert Bocrabee Hill lies on the seldom used track between
Christie Crossing and The western edge of
Rudall River National Park. The Hill is a prominent feature and is situated some 26km (as the crow flies) or a good half days travel, west of
Hanging Rock and is easily visible from a good few kilometres away. It has a steep spinifex covered talus slope of some 30 metres culminating in a crown of red
sandstone standing 8 – 10 metres in height. The hill is a ‘U’ shaped with a flat top and sits several kilometres forward of a decent sized range of hills. The track skirts the western side of the hill and heads across a minor creek. After good rains there are some pools remain in the creek approximately 600 metres behind the hill. These are often hard to see due to the thick scrub. After rains, the sides of the hill are often a vivid pink with a sea of native flowers. The plains at the base support numerous groups of camels.
I retraced this route west to east in July, 2009 and found the track a lot better defined. Fantastic views of the surrounding country can be gained from
the summit and it is a great climb at the north western corner of the Hill. There is a cairn on top of the hill at the base of which is a jar containing messages left in 2004.
