Ora Banda WA @ ExplorOz

Ora Banda is located approximately 70km from Kalgoorlie. The Ora Banda Historical Inn will be 100 years old in 2011. The grounds have 7 motel units and a caravan park (coming soon) with powered and un-powered sites. Located next to the Ora Banda Historical Inn grounds is the old Government Battery which used to process ore for the local prospectors and will soon be turned into a museum.

Ora Banda is a goldfields town which seems to be hovering between ghost town and revitalised mining centre.

Although Ora Banda (the name is Spanish meaning 'band of gold) is now a virtual ghost town, it can claim a longevity which most of the other so called 'ghost towns' on the goldfields have never enjoyed.

Gold was discovered in the Ora Banda district in 1893 and shortly afterwards the Weston brothers established the Ora Banda mine. The mine continued to operate until the late 1970s although it was forced to stop operations during World War I because of the lack of water.

Goldfields Loop
Go back to the turbulent days when new towns sprouted soon after a gold find only to turn to ruins after the gold dried up. The trek paints the picture of the gold rush days in WA, the jubilance and hardships faced and the towns that survived. [Feature Story]
