Description of Ularring Rock
Ernest Giles and his exploring party arrived at Ularring Rock on 15 October 1875 on their journey from Beltana in
South Australia to
Perth and the Swan River. Tommy Oldham was the first to sight it.
On the evening of the 16th Giles and party was threatened with a full blown attack by painted aboriginal warriors, with spears, clubs and other weapons which came across as an organised force. Giles ordered to strike first and drove the natives back. He states that “they approached us in a solid phalanx of five or six rows, each row consisting of eighteen or twenty warriors.”
Jess
Young managed to find out the name from the natives – Ularring, with the accent on the second syllable. Cobb & Co. stopped here later, as part of their transport network. There is another Ularring Rock 20 kilometres north north west of Meckering. (31 Degrees 29 Minutes south, 116 Degrees 52 Minutes east)
