I've been trying to get the $10 accelerate plan to use in an iridium phone but I haven't had any success.

I've tried a shop (telstra branded), online chat, and SAVE team. The best I've been offered is $20 plan with no credit.

Has anyone been able to obtain the plan in the last couple of months?

Cheers

A Telstra shop can't help you. You have to ring telstra and ask to speak to disconnections. They are the only division of telstra that can offer that sim.

Hi Peter,

SAVE team is a telephone accessible disconnections team, I called them.

Cheers.

Hi Bob,

I tried that number before and had no luck being told that the plan was removed last year.

I tried calling again after your message. I first spoke to the sales team: no go.

I tried again after that and spoke to disconnections team: was told even though a couple of months ago someone may have been put on the plan, it was grandfathered and ended 6 weeks ago when new plans came in. That guy seemed helpful making suggestions to help me that may have been outside of telstra range :) So unless someone does better than me, it may be gone as of 6 weeks ago. Next cheapest thing would be $20 (but even that is door of the house now).

Would be great if someone could get it and let us know how but for now I am not sure if $20 is worth it a month for me, or if the costs of signing up before every trip (and disconnecting after) would be cheaper.

Thanks for the follow up, gwur.

Shame about that plan, don't get much for 10 bucks these days. I took that copy off EO midway through 2016, so it would have been doomed even then. I'm regularly out of Phone range so happy to keep my 9505 ready to go. Just looking to save a few dollars over the year.

Looks like the $35/mth plan might be the go? Have had our sat phone for at least 15 years and never once had a call from Telstra to upgrade/downgrade our plan, whereas with our mobile/BigPond account................!!!

Just 4 weeks ago I had the disconnections team drop my $10 month casual plan down to just $5 per month to keep me as a Telstra customer. Maybe you aren't demanding enough.

I tried once more and maybe you are right that I am not saying the right things but nothing. I was put on hold, and was told that they tried to see if it could be provisioned but it didn't work and the supervisor couldn't do it. I was told that if you already have it then something COULD be done about prices but no new customers.

Yeah, it can make all the difference depending on who you get at the other end of the line. I had this $10 sim about 15yrs ago and eventually after about 10 years let it lapse. About 4 yrs ago I tried to get it again and wow, what a wild goose chase, so many different stories from telstra and forums.
Then about 2 yrs ago I tried to get it again and it was like trying to uncover the mafia no shit, I happened to speak to disconnections and let them know I was going to drop all from telstra and low and behold it suddenly appeared from nowhere.

I just had a big dispute with these idiots at telstra about being charged for calls on this sim card that has been sitting on the kitchen bench for 8 months, long story short and they bent over backwards to keep me which part of the deal they offered dropped that sim to $5 per month.

Good luck.

If your intended use is just for emergencies you can use your normal Telstra mobile sim if it is on a post paid plan with IR.
Calls cost more but it does work.
Downside is that in an emergency you have to physically put it in the satphone.
Might be easier and more cost effective to just connect to Iridium on a $35 a month plan as it does include a small call allowance. We've done that as we are usually away quite a bit even for short trips out of mobile coverage.

It seems to be one of these:

No call credit included:
*Telstra $20/month GSM sim with no calls but month to month (and tricky to obtain). min $240/year or $20 each month for connect/disconnect each trip connected but constant reconnects are not guaranteed as its becoming an old plan and may go $10 path
*Telstra regular GSM plan swapped into iridium when out of reception (what would be the charges when regular stream of SMS and calls come in? voicemail notifications? Cost of those would need to checked. Swapping sim during emergency would not be my preference. Do any plans include credit value?
*Pivotel casual at $22/month with a once off $110 connection fee. min $264/year plus $110 on first connection

Call credits included:
*Telstra $35/month (or higher) satellite plan on a contract. min $840/2 years
*Pivotel plan on a contract (starts at $40). min $960/2 years
*Pivotel satellite plan and a GSM plan to get redirection so people can use same number to call both. min $1440/2 years ($40 iridium and $20 mobile)
*Pivotel plan activated and disconnected each trip with $50 connection fee for each activation (min cost $90 per trip)
*Prepaid card (prices start from a lot)

What have I missed?

Its a trickier choice for those that have irregular use for it like me.

To follow up on Peter's comments...

You don't need to travel far, even from a major capital city, to find that you might be out of phone range. Sat phones can fill this gap and if you go to the expense of a Satphone perhaps you can put it to better use than just keeping it in a glovebox to be used in an emergency only.

I have a $40 plan for my Iridium via Pivotel, and use it regularly without paying any more than $40 per month and I speak on it a lot.

You don't need a Satphone and GSM plan for redirection...

This is how I do it, I wrote about it in a blog a few years back and you can read it here...

Satphones - Don't get hung-up on costs

Not for everyone, but hopefully some food for thought.

No you don't. Emergency calls (to 112) do NOT require a SIM at all.

So as emergency only you can have a phone without a sim and still dial 112 in Australia to get contact to someone?

That's right Frank . . .

A Sat phone on some sort of acceptable cost plan is best chosen for the ability to call (for example) a mechanic in nearby town, a recovery organisation, your vehicle insurance company, family / friends to say all good, etc etc.

Otherwise you might as well just have a $245 PLB with no ongoing costs for 10 years.

112 will work in a mobile without a SIM card, but it doesn't work with an Iridium Sat phone without a SIM.

You can dial 000 for free, but you do need the SIM to lock in, and register with the Iridium network.

Try it.

Hi Tony,

I just did.

First I tried with an old disused and "disconnected" SIM. The handset came up with "Invalid account" but on 112 I got through to 000 emergency. Apologised for the test call, but they were quite happy about it.

I tried again with no SIM. The phone said "Check SIM" but I got through to emergency services.

My handset is a Motorola 9505A

The phone is a single mode Iridium handset.

Ie Iridium ony. There's no way it could connect to the mobile network.

Is there?

Last time they told me the plan was no longer available (I think about two years ago) they also said it had been cancelled "six weeks ago" I told them I knew of people on it , persevered and they reinstated it for me. Still working now.

Maybe they are digging their heels in more, now?

LOL my answer is almost exactly the same as Mark's. I was told it was cancelled and only the $20 plan was available. Eventually I got the $20 plan then rang Telstra and asked about why the $10 plan does not exist any more.

"But it does, do you want to go on it?" Was the reply. Frustrating.

The story may have changed now. But I went through exactly the same issue as you and Mark 18 months ago.

I've been trying to get onto one of these through Boost and Southern Phones, both of which use the Telstra network and both of which used to have 5$ and $10 postpaid plans that worked with the right Iridium handset.

I haven't tried through Telstra

Unfortunately the SIMS issued by those retailers for the cheap post paid plans no longer work on Iridium, even though I had international roaming activated. They would allow the phone to log on, but then throw up "Restricted Area" and then no service other than emergency was available. They appear to be grandfathered - I have a friend who has a $5.00 plan with Southern Phones and it works. The $5 plan is no longer available, replaced by a $10 plan. It didn't work.

The Cook and I both have regular Telstra mobile post paid plans with international roaming. In remote areas we leave her phone for normal mobile use for family when in coverage and put my SIM into the Iridium handset for emergency and "essential" communications.

From what I can make out on my itemised bill after making and receiving a few test calls through Iridium, charges are as follows:

To make a call: 50c connection, $1.50 per 30 sec.
To receive: $1.00 per 30 sec

I didn't test SMS, but Telstra's published Iridium rates for SMS are 50c for a 160 character text.

That's all considerably cheaper than Pivotel's $22.00 casual plan and for just a short "hello kids" phone call not too bad.

I have an up to the minute update on the $10 Accelerate Plan.

It is no longer available, As I mentioned earlier, to keep me as a customer, part of the deal was they offered to drop my $10 Accelerate plan down to $5.

Last night I tried to ring my sat phone with this sim and It didn't ring, tried to ring my mobile from my sat phone and it didn't ring.

Long story short, they couldn't put me back on the $10 Accelerate because it doesn't exist, after a lot of communication and bullshitting me around they have now put me on $20 Go Mobile Casual Plan and are discounting me $10 a month to make it still $10 a month. I can make calls on this plan.

So it does actually look like the $10 Accelerate plan is not available anymore.

Hope that helps.

Well that's a good prompt for everyone on $10 plan to check their service!

The best offer I got was $15 data plan on a contract, but it has international roaming and can be used for calls. The only catch is if Telstra thinks you are using data on a mobile phone then they could block that device. So maybe $20 is a better choice.

When considering $20/month with zero credit and cost to receive calls its really better value to go on to $40 or $50/month Pivotel, I think. Especially if the phone will be used regularly to receive phone calls and send sms.

Got the $20/month with $5 credit so $15/month. Just wasn't comfortable with the whole data one possibly being blocked if used in a phone.
If usages increases from emergency only (including calling for a tow :) ) to actually using it as a phone then Pivotel $40 would be:
$35 cost ($5 credit included) so $20 more. So ~10min of a received phone calls would make Pivotel more attractive.

Hi gwur

I have used Pivotel a few times and it is way cheaper if you are going to call or particularly if people are going to be calling you. If somebody rings you on the Pivotel network it only costs the caller normal mobile rates, most people have unlimited calls these days so that works out very well. Pivotel give you a regular mobile phone number, outgoing calls made by you are also much cheaper than Telstra.
I usually just pay the $50 connection and $50 month with no contract so you can just have for 1 month if that's all you need.

Cheers
Peter

As I have said above they couldn't put me back on $10 accelerate plan so they have put me on $20 month plan and give me $10 month discount. My sim now works again in my Sat phone.

@TTTSA Lost the story a bit - accept the $10 Accelerate plan may not be available anymore to new customers..but why did they "as part of the deal" change your plan "to $5 a month". What deal ?...and why? If you were on the $10 Accelerate plan why did you change? I am on the plan and have not been approached to change.

Did you change the plan of your own accord and then establish it was no good for sat phones ....and then start negotiating?

Cheers

It is getting confusing, cut a long story short. I kept getting billed for calls on my $10 accelerate plan that I wasn't making, sim card is sitting on kitchen bench not even in a phone. Telstra were not going to remove these charges, $6 and $2 over 2 months.
I asked to cancel all of my Telstra services which is around $250 month.

They offered me a very good deal on 2 of my mobiles and 2 of the tablets, they also said to fix the issue on the $10 sim they would reduce it to $5month. What they didn't tell me was that it is a data only plan @ $5 month, which is obviously not suitable to make calls from.

Unable to reconnect me to $10 accelerate plan they put me on $20 month plan and only charge me $10 month for it.

Hope that is clearer.

OK - now I get it. Yes the downside of a normal testra sim in an iridium sat phone is that you will get stung for all incoming calls, stored messages and sms's....when the sim is registered to the sat phone network (i.e. you put the sim in the sat phone and turn it on once). Once registered on the network and even when the sat phone is turned off you will incur these charges if people try to ring/sms your number.

When you are not using the sat phone the trick is to take the sim card out and put it back into a "normal" phone and turn it on so that the sim gets registered on the normal mobile network again (not the sat phone network) then you will not get charged anything if someone tries to contact you. When you are ready for you next trip you can put it back in the sat phone.

Unless you have a proper sat phone plan it doesn't matter what other "normal" plan you are on...if the telstra sim is registered to the sat phone network you will get charged for incoming calls/sms. Well that's my understanding of the situation. Its a bit of messing around but works for me.

If I used the sat phone a bit more it would probably be more economic to get a proper sat phone plan as it doesn't take long to rack up a good bill using a normal sim card, given the higher rates they charge when using one.

Cheers

Hi Greg,
The thing about my situation is that no one knows the phone no. linked to this sim card and the card is not even in the phone, but according to Telstra I have made 2 calls with it to numbers that Telstra told me don't even exist and I can't ring those numbers back!

The whole idea of having this sim is so that no one knows that no. so nobody can ring me.

I can’t explain how you were getting charged for calls you didn’t make to numbers that don’t exist - very strange.

Just for the record though, keep in mind they recycle phone numbers - so even though you may not have told anyone your "new" number, the previous user of that number may have given it to 1,000 people and not told them when they changed. So, it is possible to get unsolicited phone calls (and there are also telemarketers of course). The number I got was registered to a plumber - I was getting requests for plumbing quotes for a while :)

You have a $20 plan with Telstra that gives you unlimited sms and phone calls? Is it still available for new customers?!

You also receive monthly credit? Or do you pay for each sms you send when the sim is in the iridium phone?

Could be off track here (as usual) but I doubt very much a "normal" (not sat) Telstra SIM plan (at any price) would provide unlimited SMS on a sat phone through the Iridium service. But ...I could be wrong.

I am also confused by the use of the word "city". Normal mobile phones work in lots of places far removed from "citys".

Don't know if it's still available but it certainly isn't listed anymore as I just looked...I've had this for sometime now. Doesn't mean you can't try and negotiate I suppose.
No monthly credit and have never paid for a text sent from the sat on this plan...on the previous plan it was 50c or 75c.
Calls from the sat in and out are the usual $2.00 per 30sec.
Don't send many texts but when I'm on my own I just check in from time to time.
