Terry,

On my L/C80 you can only move the range selector when in park (or sometimes neutral). May be different with the Prado.

My surf (similar or same geabox as yours) has to be in Neutral before you can select low range. Hi Range 4wd can be selected anytime up to 100km/h by pushing the button.

If it has a button !!!
If a leaver shift like mine, (no button) shift to Hi 4wd on the go anytime,
to go Lo 4wd put gear in neutral then select Lo range.
Some times the light on dash do's note come on immediately

Cheers

Terry,
I have a feeling there can be a spring or some such that has been known to occasionally muck up. Someone from Prado group may know. Phil ?

You should always be able to get it to move into Hl, and you knows its locked when the light comes on soon after.

Sounds like Terry's problem is that the lever is actually jammed and won't get into Hl. Sounds like he needs to remove the centre console and unstick and lubricate the mechanism.

According to the owners maual is says something along the lines of: if it doesn't go straight into HL you may need to accelerate / decelerate whislt putting preasure on the lever. Make sure you are heading in a straight line. You must be stopped and in N or P to go into LL

I've also got a 2000 model Prado TD auto.

Sometimes it doesn't go into Hi 4WD when I shift the lever forward, but I've found if I drive for a while when holding the lever where it should be it will eventually click in and the light will come on.

Getting back out of Hi4WD the same thing sometimes happens, I need to hold the lever back for a while. Alternatively with lever pulled back I've found a few corners will generally switch it out and light will go off.

Should have added that you need to be stopped and in neutral to switch between Hi/Lo range

thanks for the replies guys, I am aware you need to put it into neutral when going into 4WD Low, I think Phill is right, there may be a mechanical failure. I removed the centre console tonight but could not see much, will have to investigate further this weekend

Terry,
I have a 98 Prado, but a manual. About 2 years ago, when were exploring the Flinders Ranges, I went to put the transfer case into HL and I could not budge the lever. Stuck solid in High Range not locked !

After being told by some local 4wd experts, that "Youve, got a stuffed transfer case", I took it to Toyota expecting to get a quote for big $'s.

About mid afternoon after dropping it off, I got a call, to say it was fixed, and that there was no charge ! I could have been knocked over with a feather !

It turns out, that the lever, where it goes through into the transfer case passes through a spring that is shaped a bit like a set of W's on their side. From the description given to me, the location of the lever through the spring sometimes jumps a notch with the result that the lever is jammed. I have had a look the arrangement myself, and also in the workshop manual, but I am not sure wether I understand the description.

The Service Manager at Toyota stated he had seen the fault a couple of times before.

Since I was attempting to move the lever into HL while moving (says you can do this in the owners handbook) when it jammed, I since have decided to play safe and stop completely before moving the lever into HL, LL or back.

I hope that this is what your fault is.

Cheers,
Mal58

I had a similar situation to MAL58, however it was shorthly after I had a seal relaced on the transfer case to my 2001 TD (manual). Locked solid in High 2WD would move an inch. Toyata dealer in Port Hedland fixed the problem which appeared tio be the leaver not seated correctly after the repair. Since then (about 20000 km) not a drama. I didn't even know about the neutral thing, I simply stop put the clutch in and away I go in Low. Low to high is usually on the move. I'd get Toyoto to check it.
