Hi all -heading off in a couple of weeks, probably follow the Darling (from the south) and on to Currawinya NP and the Bulloo River and then across to Innaminka. Was wondering if anyone knows if there are yabbies being caught anywhere along the way?! Any advice on the best way to catch them?
We were lucky enough to catch dozens (6-8 doz. in an hour) with a dab net below the causeway at Innaminka in 2000 -doubt whether we'll do that agen!!!
cheers JJ

Ive always used meat tied to string, pull it up, then scoop a net behind as they always swim backwards dont know if its leagal anymore.

Yes it is legal , but in Vic. opera house nets are not legal...used the old string method when a youngster for very good results in farm dams...it is o.k. for operas in N.S.W....you need a current fishing licence..

Hi Bruce Opera house nets are legal in private dams in Vic.
The quickest way is just use the hoop nets, the opera house now requires a specific size ring on the entrys, the opera is good for overnight etc harder for yabbies to get into than a hoop.

Yes Bernie quite true they are legal in private dams , but then the fisheries mob could hardly be expected to have control over them either . ( the dams ) I carry them to fish in waters in N.S.W , but if I get caught with them along side waters in Vic. even though I am not and do not intend to use them I can be booked for having them .

JJ,

I've always used opera house nets, they fold flat and are very easy to use and are only about $5 or $6 each.

Cheers

Opera house nets are definitely the way to go Craig. I've found that a good bait to use is dry dog tucker - not so messy and easy to cart with you.
