Good morning everyone. I wondered if people had any comments/observations about the Cub Scout forward opening camper? I am in the process of discernment (as they say) as I need a low weight camper to pull behind my Subaru Outback.

Many thanks. Victor.

I have seen the Cub Scout when I was up in East Arnhemland and they looked a good screwed together camper when I compared them to other forwards fold campers that I saw on the track.
The issue with forward folding campers is their “ball weight” can be high, the Scout is 120kg so check this against what the max ball weight the Outback can handle.

Lightweight Forward Fold Off Roader They claim the ball weight is 120 kg. That would be the unladen weight. Look where most of the fridge cabinet and pantry are. Half the weight that you place in the fridge section would be carried on the ball. You would probably not be able to use the pantry at all because most of the weight in there would appear on the ball.

I note many of these campers have a lot of storage located ahead of the main trailer body. Have any of you with that style of camper weighed the ball weight when you have loaded up that front storage? I note that many of the utes with broken backs have these front loaded campers in tow. If they load as front heavy as I suspect, no wonder there are so many utes out there that have had broken backs.

Thanks Peter. You have provided further specifics that I can follow up with the CUB people. Very helpful.

Victor.

Victor,
We have a Cub Frontier which I believe is a heavy duty version of the Scout.
It has an advertised unladen ball eight of 125 kg. However, on a recent trip fully laden, we put everything over a weigh bridge and the ball weight was 220 kg.

Victor,
What year model is your Outback? The latest ones (2021) onwards are rated to take a 200kg max ball load, but earlier models were a lot less than this. I think the 2016 model was only 120kg. The max towball load should be in the owners manual.
Cheers, Keir

Thanks everyone. Yes, we have a 2019 model so the ball weight capacity is probably going to be inadequate. I will keep researching.

Much obliged. Victor.

Depending on how much camper you are chasing, you could look at A-van's Aliner range for lightweight/low-ball-weight units.
